What time of Turkey Season
« on: March 14, 2013, 08:40:57 PM »
When in the season have you had your best luck bagging your bird? The times I have hunted its usually been mid to late may and have yet to bag one. Been close but couldn't close the deal. Not sure if I can make it this year but was curious about those that have been successful. Thanks guys!

I have has sucess through out the whole season. I think the key is just finding a bird that hasn't been pressured that bad. Where i go turkey hunting we usually walk in about 5 miles don't see as many birds but when we do they come running in and i think later in the season the less you call the better off you are.
Whack em and stack em

We have had success pretty much the whole season early middle and late. But we are in the woods a lot during turkey season.

I have had good luck through the whole season,  shot them minutes after flydown on the opener til the 21st of may (latest I have hunted since they went to the may 31st closer ). Birds can be less vocal at the end of the season but can still be killed.

I've seen lots of birds in the years I've been hunting for them but never sealed the deal, everything from other hunters screwing up the hunt to birds being henned up or just simply not coming in close enough. I guess in time due I'll get my opportunity. I might be able to get over to the east side on the opener but my time will be limited, maybe that will pan out for me! Thanks guys for your responses!

I generally get one on opening day also, but I got mine in the middle of May last year and my Son didn't get his until late in May.

The biggest bird I called in was in mid-May, but it was way back in the sticks.

You can get them all season long, but your tactics have to change as they go thru the various transitions, plus hunting pressure and weather can effect what you do to be successful.   As mentioned earlier, the general rule is call softer and more infrequent as the season goes along, especially as they come in.  Also use a call they may not be used to (wing bone, tube call, etc),  and call in a different direction they may not be used to.   If that doesn't work do something different ... like throwing a turkey fight with a couple push-pulls doing aggravated purrs and occasionally throwing in some excited cutts on a mouth diaphragm and a few hat slaps simulating beating wings.

Thanks for the advise! If I get the chance to get out this season I will surely remember this!
