Another day on the island....
« on: March 17, 2013, 04:20:02 PM »
I guess the weekend was too slow and I needed another island adventure.  Does anyone see something amiss in this photo?

Of course the tide won't be back until after 10 tonight.  I think the West wind broke the ring on the mouring buoy I attached to as my lines and clip were there and the buoy is still out there.  Luckily this was one spot on the beach where there were no boulders and I remembered to tilt the engine.  No apparent damage done.

Dang man, that sucks!  Lemme know if you want any of those moorings checked out or maintained, I know a guy who does that stuff!

I take it that its very bad for the structure/underbelly of the hull when the tide goes out and leaves you beached?   :dunno:

Well, the good news is that it appears the boat is below the seaweed high tide line.  Tomorrow morning's high is a bit higher than the one tonight and if that doesn't work, there's always the neighbor's tractor to drag it down the beach.   :o  This pic is at about 5:00, tide is starting to rise.

I take it that its very bad for the structure/underbelly of the hull when the tide goes out and leaves you beached?   :dunno:

If it was fiberglass, I'd be more concerned.  It appears that the algae growth is still intact on the bottom, glad I didn't have that bottom paint on yet to get scratched off.   :chuckle:

I sunk my river anchor into the gravel at the water's edge, about 140' away.  Hopefully  I can pull it out to deeper water once it is floating.  The bad part is that there is a bit of a higher bar between the boat and deeper water, but if I swing to port I might be able to follow the drop more.

Small Craft Advisory through tomorrow morning, woohoo.  The good news is that mine is not the first boat to end up in this area.   :chuckle:  Probably won't be the last.

Dang man, that sucks!  Lemme know if you want any of those moorings checked out or maintained, I know a guy who does that stuff!
I think the ring on "top' of the buoy may have rusted through, although I have had the spring snap open once before on me but I was not sure if I got the line caught in it or something goofy.  Others have had them open as well and many folks use two of them.

I did find an oar that I lost last summer in the marsh grass after I dumped out a neighbor's canoe though, so that saves me $30 for a new one.

So that's why you didn't make it to the Silver Arrow Shoot!  :o I knew you were getting bored out there!
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Yeah that is no fun have had it happen in Alaska a few times luckily the skiff we used was light enough for a couple guys to move. When it happened to the 22 ft Skagit Orca one day it was all the four of us could do to muscle it around put logs under it and heave ho it down the beach a few feet. Adventure is what it is all about!

Well, I managed to get it off the beach tonight.  It took about an hour, by myself.  The tide only came up so about an inch and a half of the stern keel was in the water.  I managed to get the bow turned out, mostly into the wind.  Then I just started rocking the stern with a log under it, back and forth and back and forth, 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, 1/4 inch, etc.  The wind picked up a bit which might have helped lift the stern a little.  I'd get my back under the bow every now and then and lift and push.  I can't believe I managed to get it out tonight.

Thank goodness I sunk that anchor into the gravel earlier as I could tighten the line each time I moved the bow a little and keep the boat from turning back into the beach.  I was also able to pull the boat out on the line until the motor could clear the bottom.

So, I get the boat out to a different buoy and get it hooked up.  Then, I realized I didn't have a dinghy to get to the dock.   :yike:  Oh well, brought it into the dock and tied it off in about eight places.

The photo is very blurry with me shaking from the exertion and the wind blowing.

And all this happens when I'm 2000 miles away in Wisconsin!  I guess that will teach me to leave...  :chuckle: By the way, I just about had a heart attack this morning when I woke up and read my short email sent by lokidog on his phone at 1:39 local time. It read "Well here I sit on the buoy but I have no dinghy."  Of course I took it literally and I'm picturing him at night in the dark holding on for dear life to the buoy with no way to get to the dock or shore.  (He could have clarified that he was on the boat.)
