Sounds like people worry a-bit too much about what other people think. :dunno: kinda dumb if you ask me. Ive been one to never care about anyone else's opinion. We all know that one. Ill do what I do when I do it. I understand all the arguments in here but they're not necessary, this is why/when new laws and regulations get implied and pisses people off, Party A complains about one thing and gets new laws and regulations implied in which piss off party B, While party B does the same and gets different laws and regulations implied that pisses off party A, Its a never ending circle. No ones ever happy. Except me, Because I just go with the flow  :IBCOOL:

Orrrrr.....
Folks could quit worrying about themselves in this scenario and think about leaving the animals alone to recuperate.

Seeing as I spend the majority of my time on the coast, I don't really see any problem with getting out 'early' since it's not like the animals are condensed or facing a harsh winter.  The weather doesn't change nearly as dramatically out here.

Obviously chasing animals on a 4 wheeler or snowmobile isn't right, and I would imagine that there is already some sort of law on the books dealing with wildlife harassment.  I don't think there should be any sort of laws against taking a walk in the woods at any time.  There are the bad apples in every group.  I don't think we want to punish the vast majority of ethical shed hunters for the couple bad apples. . . Just like we don't want to take away everyone's guns because there are a few whack jobs out there.

Do what you need to in terms of gates, and access blocking, and punish those caught maliciously harassing the animals.  Like I saw someone else say on here earlier. . . It will only keep the honest guys out of there, just like the Oak Creek timing restriction does.

Shed hunting causes a few to lose their minds and common sense.

No doubt, enjoying a day out in the woods looking for sheds can be a good thing.

But obsessive, compulsive---not so much.

Smossy I got bone to fill both garages u dont have people liked that ruins it!!!  Goodluck ..
I agree with what your saying but thats just the world we live in, I agree with more restrictive laws on trespassing and animal harassment...... but not shed hunting cmon now. . a law for looking for a bone thats reproduced year after year? Give me a break. And Uhh great you have alot of sheds. High five. and I drive a car that barely runs. I dont see your point in that remark. I dont chase animals around period. Ill leave that to zoo-keepers. But I do wonder around in the woods aimlessly looking for sheds for hours upon hours with no success. Ive never even seen an ACTUAL game animal though besides maybe a duck or pheasant.

You are correct on there being a difference between the two sides of the mountains, the (our) westside definitely doesn't see the winters like they do on the east. I don't think the animals get bothered as much on the westside, it's too hard to find sheds in this mess. As for the eastsiders though, much easier more open ground, I like the ideas of gates and no motor vehicle access for certain times of the year much better than any type of season.  Smossy, if your not seeing game when your antler hunting this time of year, your in the wrong area. Looking for blacktail sheds is a be-outch, tough to find them in this tangled mess we live in. It's taken me years to get the small collection of blackies that I have.

So....maybe somebody can help me understand the level of fanaticsm some folks are going to. I'm speaking of the comments about chasing, harassing, and sometimes being offroad when not supposed to be. Now, I've not killed elk, will be going on my first elk hunt this year, have not shed hunted for their horns, and am not assuming I am some great hunter. However, are those that chase bone with such abandon that they are such poor hunters they are looking to hang a pair of antlers on the wall that way? Is it for profit that some act this way? Bragging rights only?

This is why people shed hunt! For a chance at finding something like this. 217" Gross

Thats fine, I go on my hikes, and while Im hiking I just stop here and there and take a peek around. Im not a hardcore shed hunter, With a shed finding dog, and a truck to haul out elk sheds taller then myself. I just like to be out in the woods away from everyone..
Guess Im not really a shed hunter... Some people on here should be called shed finders.. I know virtually nothing about hunting, deer, elk, bear, cougar, small game... Other than they taste delicious and I want to get into a new lifestyle... Which Is why I'm on here... To learn :chuckle:

Just being out there is learning, I spent my first few years with my dad hunting pushing trees down and throwing rocks at grouse when I was a youngen. If you cant carry a gun legally you should really look into archery and go for it, archery is the best when it comes to elk!

I love shed hunting. I try to get in the woods all year round. Finding sheds is an awesome bonus when I'm hiking/scouting in the off season. A minority of people are the ones that cause the problems. I'd hate to see a shed season hit statewide for the actions of few. Not saying that nothing should be done, just don't want to have to walk past shed antlers while I'm spending time in the woods because its illegal to pick them up.

And as for dogs, if they're chasing and pushing game, they should stay home. I take my two dogs with me most of the time. They aren't really shed dogs, I just like having them around and exercising them. They alert me to deer and elk, but they don't chase or bark at them. I've only seen them bark at coyotes and bears. Even then, they listen to me and mind my commands.

I see nothing wrong with being passionate about hitting the woods and finding sheds. Unfortunately, just as it is with hunting, no matter what the rules and regulaions are, there will be losers that do the wrong thing outta selfishness.
