Multi-season/Special draw tags, how does it work?
« on: March 26, 2013, 05:12:50 PM »
Ok heres my dilemma/question. May 20th Im signed up for hunter education.. But you have to put in for special draw/multi season tags by March 31st if im not mistaken, I have a WildID through wdfw for my fishing licenses I get every year.. SO would i be able to put in for these now being as i would have my hunting permit before the season opened up? Is the fishing and hunting WildID the same thing? I dont want to miss the opportunity if I would be able to put in for these just because my class is not complete. Slim chance ill actually draw a tag this year but that would atleast go towords points for next year right?

If I'm not mistaken, the deer is a 100% draw this year (depending on the entrants). Theres still a good chance for elk though. As far as your hunter ed goes, your cuttin it close. However, in 10 days, you should be done by then with the class.

This year's application deadline will be around May 20 so you will not be certified in time. You can apply for OIL permits without a license, however.

No, you won't be able to apply this year. You need to purchase your hunting license in order to apply for permits. You can't do that until you finish hunter's education.

You should start applying for the OIL's this year though, since you don't need a license for those.

OIL is a euphemistic acronym for Once In a Lifetime. A more fitting acronym is NOIL Bighorn sheep, moose, and mountain goat. are once in a lifetime permits

No. The only permits you'll be able to apply for are moose, sheep and goats.

Our OIL's are OIL's with very difficult to draw permits in most other states too. I think a lot of guys go to other states because the hunting is better, and/or it's easier to draw permits for quality animals.

I know in the past you could get a hunting license for one year without passing a hunter ed class.  Not sure what that program was called or if it still is in place or what you have to do to qualify to get the one year exemption.  But if you can do that you could apply for multi season now then get your hunter ed done later this year.

If somebody that lives close to Smossy were inclined, they could sign up with him for the one year, hunter ed deferral, so he could purchase a license and get started in the drawings before the cut-off date....he could still take the course then as scheduled.

Possible downside may be the requirement for the hunters to still hunt together come fall if he passed hunter's ed and got his certificate between times???  Don't know if having the certificate would change that or not...but just an idea to toss out to help him get into all the permit drawings without having to wait another year.
It is better to be consistently incorrect than inconsistently correct...
