Winston would be good, and the Toutle would be a good option as well.

if you just want to see some elk drive around Ryan Road in Buckley any day just after daybreak.  I work at the Rainier School at the end of the road and see herds of 20+ almost every day.  only about 1/2 hour from puyallup

Though theres not much hiking involved, I drive 30-50 miles up Lewis river road once a week and have seen alot of elk every week since January, some days close to 100 head.

Theres actually a yelm heard, If you just want to view actual wildlife and not zoo creatures. Im not sure where they are right about now but if you travel around the roads by the eatonville cuttoff road you have a good chance of spotting them in fields. Probably not the experience your looking for but its pretty close to puyallup.

We saw 5 different heards on our way to our hike up Umtanum Ridge  a few weekends ago.  I really want to show her what its like to see them in the woods, in a clearcut, in timber just on foot. But thanks for all the suggestions guys

Good amount up in the Mashel.  Have seen herds from Eatonville all the way up to Ashford.  Skate Creek and Hwy 7 from Elbe to Morton. all around Morton up to Packwood.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

 8) i have an elk spot Im going to hunt. But they won't be there for a few more months. I keep taking her out scouting my spots but I think she's getting bored with looking at game trails , piles of poop, and year old rubs lol. But if I stumble upon a new area that might become another spot  :dunno:

We hiked about 4 miles past closed gates in of the 4100 rd in st. helens , We saw one lone cow on a ridgeline im sure there were more over the otherside. We also saw 3 seperated dead cow elk :bash: They were all coming off gametrails going toward the road but dead.. I called WDFW and reported it as possible poaching. I looked at one and it seemed to have a bullet hole in the neck, but the other two were starting to stink so my wife didnt want me to take a closer look..

I plan on checking out allot of the other spots mentioned in the next few weeks. We hike every wekend.

Go out to the dump past 224th on Meridian. They are in the field across from the dump daily. A doctor owns the property and does not allow hunting. You cant miss it, as it is posted every 10 feet NO HUNTING. Save you a trip way out. Or head to Packwood/Ashford. They are in town at the local baseball field.

If you end up out on the coast you can hike around Quinault and find them.  I've never hunted there but when I've been there with the fam on camping trips we've almost always seen them.

Yep, head towards Eatonville, Ashford, Randle, Packwood, any of those have elk either in a field where you can see from the road, or jump off on a forest road and stump around, you'll see something. I see more off the side off the road than in the woods.

In Buckley and Enumclaw... Over by Mount Peak in Enumclaw drive the fields over there and you will see the same 20 to 30 elk every day or drive the fields in Buckley and you will see them off the buckley straights or off 262nd, 112th, Entwhistle, or Munday Loss...

Depending on how long and hard you want to hike down on the Tatoosh Wilderness Trail is a good area to see some elk, and hiking around to the South end of Packwood lake is a good spot to see a good sized herd
