Cold Steel Pipe/Frontier Hawk
« on: April 05, 2013, 01:15:51 PM »
Just recieved my Tomahawk in the mail today from Cold Steel..
Pipe Hawk/Frontier Hawk. or as I call it, a hatchet.

Seems pretty solid for the price. I have a lot of work to do to it yet, Its pretty balanced as far as weight goes and has a nice shape and feel. Looks cheesy with the glossy metal black paint though.

Its Precision forged from 5150 carbon steel, with a 22" Handle and a Hammer Backside. (Which I absolutely love)
  • Im going to wind up removing the set screw and throwing that away.
  • Shaving down the handle a tad for a snug fit at the head.
  • Sanding down the handle to remove the factory clear coat.
  • Adding a nice dark wood varnish to help treat the wood a little better.
  • Stripping the black paint off then adding some Gun-blue to remove any shine and give it an original look.
  • Gonna do some edge work and try to get it nice and sharp.

Any Ideas on products as far as doing this work listed would be nice. I know how to do it all, Just not sure what products work better over others.. Ill keep everyone posted as It will be a fun little project.

Here are some before photos.

Jasco to take off the paint.  Spray it down, wrap it in foil, leave it for a day or two and most of the paint will be off.

I wouldn't shave down the handle too much. A hawk is made to be thrown. Throw it with the handle shaved down and you run the risk of the head going one way and the handle going the other. All the ones I've ever seen at the rendezvous' we used to go to have been loose fitting.

Its seated in with an alen screw, or whatever its called. Im only doing enough shaving for it to fit snug. Otherwise its completely loose and doesnt even stay on the handle.
I know what your saying, Luckily I got one with a lot of extra head. About a good 1 1/4 inches. Ill show u when I get my tools out of my mothers vehicle so I can start taking it apart.

Most importantly....how's the pipe part work?  :o :chuckle:

Lol Not a real pipe, Its just designed loosely off a native pipe hawk. Its a solid steel hammer edge, not hollow or anything.
Basically a hammer. :)
