Well, I got offered a lab pup on Easter and I could not say no....

Now I got to figure out how to train this little fella how to find sheds.
Any suggestions on good books/videos on the topic?

Even though my dog hasn't found any thing and may not..  I have her shed to chew on and planted them without my scent on them.. Since you live in a highly populated deer area sheds aren't a problem for you :chuckle:

Hopefully he will be better at finding them then me. I average about 1 shed for every 10 miles of hiking. :bash:

There is lots of info out there. Do a search for shed dog hunting. It has become a very popular sport over the last few years. There are even completions to compete at.

Raxs waxs, seems to work well and make shure you wash sheds so your sent isnt on them or if your dog picks them up wash as well so its sent isnt on them. Figure out weather your dog likes to play or likes treats for reward, and keep on it persistance pays off. also train him to sit or bark when he finds one sometimes they cant carry them back so they will pass right on by. i have had great luck with this method my dog is 2 and he has already found around 13 sheds. good luck thats a nice lookin pup.

We have a yellow lab pup we are training for sheds. We are using Bill Hillman videos for the basic stuff... Primarily building the retrieve drive and teaching the fetch command. We just started collar conditioning and we are going to force fetch him. The only training he will get a treat for is when he delivers a shed to hand.

Keep your training sessions short and make sure you keep it fun. We only work our dog on formal training 3-4 times a week for 15-20 minutes....but don't be fooled by the short sessions.... Training a puppy right can be a lot of work.
