Turkey hunting help, west side of Hwy 97 near Goldendale
« on: April 02, 2013, 09:04:18 AM »
I need some help from some of you guys in the Goldendale area. I have a friend that has offered the use of his cabin on the west side of hwy. 97 near Box Canyon road. I know that a lot of that land is owned by some timber company. My question, is there any area that is hunter friendly on the west side of the road on that timber company land, or am I wasting my time this late in the game?

Most all of that is land owned by Western Pacific, and I believe on the west side of the highway, it's all open to hunting. Pretty sure it's all gated, but you can walk in and hunt. For some reason east of the highway is closed. I never could figure out why. I think it may be leased to a hunting club.

That is correct the west side is all open to walk in hunting. There are birds up there too. The east side is closed to all access. It has nothing to do with hunting clubs. The west was left open due to an agreement with WDFW. Sometimes I wonder if the east was closed down to all access to allow wolves to take over after seeing the big decline in the deer population.

There is some chunks of private up there off highway 97. A good gps will help out to make sure you don't get into them. There is plenty of birds and plenty of hunters. After the first week and first couple weekends it gets better for pressure. The birds have been messed with a good bit by then but you can still hunt them and kill them.
