Looks like a bear tappen to me.  Probably a den within 100 yards of where it was found.  It's not overly large for grizzly bear, but I wouldn't rule that out in that area.  The tappen of a 400+# black bear will easily be that large as well.  Find the den and stick your head inside and let us know which it is ;)

But this was found in November.......... :dunno:

Wouldn't a tappen be found in the spring?

Depends on food source and weather conditions.  Not unusual when a brief cold front moves in during a time of poor feed to have bear sleep for only a week or two at a time.  If more effort is used to obtain food than return from that food they will sleep.  They might do this a half dozen times before finally settling in for the longer winter hibernation.  Coastal black bear of Oregon and Washington might never hibernated for more than a few weeks at a time their whole lives.

I have seen fresh ones from coastal black bear.  Can't say I have seen one from a high mountain bear or grizzly.  When they are fresh they look almost to be encased in parafin.

In the eighties we used to bait rather close to some year round dens.  It was not uncommon to see softer anal plug discharges within 20 yards of bait sites.  These are quite waxy as well, but haven't had the long duration and matting of the straw like organics found in hibernation tappen.

One of the problem control bears we took out of an area around a trailer court in late October early November had a monster tappen filled with Barbie doll parts.  It's a little concerning to approach a plug of that size and see human like arms, legs and heads in it :o  Even if they were miniature replications.  I shot him at 5 yards with my bow and all he did was snort at me.  No running, no spinning, nothing but snort and look at me!  I dropped the bow, drew my Delta Elite and in a loud voice said, "You take one step this way!"  About then he raised his head and rolled over backward dead as dead.  Once it was over I began to shake more than I think I've ever shaken before or since.  And I think it was all because of the dang Barbie parts in that tappen.  Still freaks me out a little :chuckle:

I'm no bear biologist and I can't tell you for certain that's what you have there.  But it sure looks like one with the wax weathered off to me.  :dunno:

Oregon State University is a great place to email photos like that.  Every time I have emailed them photos for identification they have responded very promptly.  And they have identified everything I have ever offered up.  I sent a picture of a Wolverine track I found on the Oregon coast.  Though it had been a week since I took the picture they asked for directions to the sight.  I don't know if they ever took a team out there to check it out, but it was fun to talk with them as they were very excited about it.

This is from Bob McGuire's book Black Bears.  Highly recommended for anyone wanting to become educated in black bears, baiting black bear and hunting black bear.

"It has long been reported that bears consume large quantities of roughage in the fall.  This was purported to have purged their digestive tract and formed a plug which would seal their systems until the following spring.  Rogers reports that although bears may ingest small amounts of the material that they rake into their dens for beds, feces will form even when the bear eats nothing, and defecation at least once during the denning period is not unusual."

Funny :tung:  I have hunted and guided a few guys like that.  The reason I never go anywhere without a roll of blue shop towels (the all weather poopin'/tappen paper).

Thank you Redsav,  I didn't even think of that.  I agree with your later posts, send that photo and any others to U of  O or some university biology department for confirmation.
