Looks like a bear tappen to me. Probably a den within 100 yards of where it was found. It's not overly large for grizzly bear, but I wouldn't rule that out in that area. The tappen of a 400+# black bear will easily be that large as well. Find the den and stick your head inside and let us know which it is
Depends on food source and weather conditions. Not unusual when a brief cold front moves in during a time of poor feed to have bear sleep for only a week or two at a time. If more effort is used to obtain food than return from that food they will sleep. They might do this a half dozen times before finally settling in for the longer winter hibernation. Coastal black bear of Oregon and Washington might never hibernated for more than a few weeks at a time their whole lives.
