Bear with a bow!
« on: April 02, 2013, 08:45:40 PM »
Got my first bear with a bow on the ground last year what a rush cant wait for august but since i cant posess a firearm i think i might invest in some of that bear spray. I ran into a bear on easter about twelve feet away equipped with nothing more then a pellet gun again what a rush i tried to shoo it off but this dude held his ground never seen that before must be cause he just came out of hybernation i dont know but it sure was cool/a little spooky.

Take up your bow, a quiver full of arrows, head out to the country and hunt some wild game.  GEN 27:3

I shot my first bear with a bow last year in my treestand. Then had a mamma and two cubs come by right at dark while I was waiting for my bear to die. It was a bit spooky , but she ran off when I yelled at her. Not sure I like the ground hunting of them thou. I will stick to my treestand.

I am just curious, since you can't posses a fire arm can you have a starters pistol? I have had to fire a round into the ground to scare a bear away that was challenging me before. I know the loud bang did the trick and it took off like a race horse. I am sure that the bear spray would work at close range.

I like the ground hunt, without bait its hard to sit in a tree stand, aside from the sow with cubs ive chase bear through the woods with nothing more then a camera one day it might catch up with me but only time will tell. I also did incounter one sow that left one cub behind with me now that was crazy.

As for the starter pistol, it shoots blanks, but technically could fire a projectile. I'd stay away from the starter pistol. Johnny would be all over you for that! Pack a whistle to scare bears away.

I agree!  A good rape whistle or small air horn sold as rape defense should work just as well.  When my mother was growing up on the coast she tells of bear approaching them at the buss stop regularly.  They used a spray bottle with bleach in it.  She tells the stories of hearing them running  nonstop until out of ear range.  So I would expect the bear spray should work as well.

My brother is an EMT.  He has a long list of stories about treating people that were hit by their own pepper spray as the wind blew it back into their face.  Not sure I would want that if I were trying to get away from a bear.  Makes me wonder if this little pepper blaster from Kimber wouldn't be a better option :dunno:  http://www.kimberamerica.com/pepperblaster  I'd sure feel better with more than two shots though.

Bear Spray works perfect, I also cannot possess a firearm and I actually feel safer with my spray, I can blast an animal/person and it does enough damage for me to make my point and or get away, while not worrien about getting charges filed for hurting an animal/person. I very very highly recommend the UDAP 13oz can.
IT will give you up to 9 seconds of full blast at 35 feet, Fogg style. They also have smaller sizes though.
It was actually created by Mark Matheny who had a close encounter with a full size Grizzly and survived thanks to some simple wimpy defense spray, He then figured being as this little spray saved his life, He would go on to create his own spray, Which right now is rated as one of the most powerful in the world on the market for sale.
You can find his product on his website below or somewhere like Cabelas. Cheers man be safe.

Heres Mark Matheny's Story, Its a pretty good read.
