Hey are there any RGS members here?  I am working on joining via a paper application because I hate using credit cards in general and especially online.

I would like to hear more about what RGS is doing in Washington.

No problem.....I belong to so many clubs its ridiculous, and I hadn't heard of that one.  I suppose its one way I try to support them.  I raise pheasants and those sort of birds, and have never heard of it.  Thanks for the link.  Thats whats cool about htis place versus some of the other boards.  We are not in competition, we are in this together.

I looked at joining the Ruffed Grouse Society a few years back; the people seemed very nice. The WA Chapter has an Annual Banquet in Seattle and they have an Annual Hunt near Curlew Lake each September.

I am planning on joining as soon as they send me a paper application.  I don't really do credit cards online.  It seems their strong areas are the midwest and upper east coast, though they have chapters in quite a few states.

I remember a few years back I went o a Fish & Wildlife meeting in Olympia, and the Ruffed Grouse Society was there speaking in support of a ban on the use of 22 rifles for shooting grouse. They have a right to their opinion but I like having the opportunity to shoot grouse with a 22 rifle, or pistol. To them it's unsporting. To me it's fun and I like eating grouse, and I don't see it as unethical, matter of fact it's a lot more challenging than ground sluicing one with a 12 gauge. Other than that I'm glad they're out there, improving habitat for ruffed grouse and other wildlife. Just can't have too many wildlife habitat organizations spending money on habitat.

Ruffled grouse need all the help they can get. I cut my teeth on grouse hunting in Yooperland. Last time I was there I saw three while bow hunting for deer. I had expected to vast numbers as I did as a kid but they seem to be dying off.

That .22 issue may be one of reasons why they are not as strong out west as out east.  I don't have an issue with using a .22 on them.  I took my oldest grouse hunting one thanksgiving when he had just turned three.  All I had was a .22 pistol, which worked great except for the missing part.  He made a pretty funny comment to me while we were out, apparently I was making to much noise because I was scaring all the gazelle away.

A Michigan outdoor site I frequent has had a couple of discussions about shooting grouse on the ground with a shotgun, man they were bent out of shape about that.  My thought is if you use a .22, then it would be a very small step to using a shotgun.  At the same time, but also in my mind they are such a different sort of mindset between using them, that I doubt I would use a shot gun for a grouse on the ground (unless I was accidentally spending several nights in the woods).

I'm a member of RGS and I feel it's a worthwhile organization. This Saturday we have a field day coming up to do some habitat improvement. We'll meet up by North Bend and then head into the timber to clear access and habitat.

The following weekend we'll meet at the Renton Fish and Game to shoot some skeet.

Our group hunt this year is near Cle Elum.

I am trying to find out directions and what time it starts.  My boys and I are going to do our best to be there, but we also have to spend time with family from California that are on a long layover down at the airport during mid afternoon.

I am waiting for an email from one the leadership folks to find out the time and directions.
