We have had some great hunts so far this week, we've been into shooting range of more than 25 legal birds the last 3 days. My last hunter and I had some really great hunts.

Two mornings ago I called and got an immediate answer, we quickly put on our gloves and head nets, then I called again, the birds gobbled back and had already cut the distance in half, we quickly sat down and I called a few more times, the birds sounded like we should be able to see them anytime. Suddenly one bird comes into view on the right and pauses for a strut but he's not clear for a shot, I called again and he dropped his tail and came almost straight for us as I heard another bird gobble to our left. The bird on the right came through some brush but there simply was not a good clear shot, suddenly he emerged into an open spot only about 15 yards in front of us, whammo, as the bird flies off I whispered "you missed, quick, turn left and stay still", I called a couple more times, suddenly the 2nd bird stepped out at 30 yards less than a minute from the last shot, I whispered "take him when you can", whammo, bird down. We took pictures and then headed for Willow creek Taxidermy. John weighed the bird, a 15 pound two year old. Not real heavy but he was in perfect condition, had an 8 1/2 beard, and was the guy's first bird, it's getting mounted in full strut. I love it when a plan comes together.

That was my turn coat hunting partner. We hunted LPO last week. He missed a Jake. First time turkey hunting for him.

We came home and he booked a hunt with you. Got two birds with you.
He booked with you next year and wanted me to come. Nope not my thing.
I do not mind coming home empty handed.
When I get my first bird it will be because I located it, set up on it, called it and killed it.

He had nothing but good things to say about your operation.
Now I am looking for another Turkey hunting partner. You ruined this one. :yike:

I want you to know that during the 3 days he hunted here he bragged about his good hunting friend who he says is the best hunter he knows. Yes that's right, every day he bragged about how great of person you are and how good of hunter you are. He's still the same guy he was before he came here and he still has the same respect for you, it would be sad for you to throw that away. Something to consider!  :twocents:

Oh we will still hunt together , we hunt elk and deer. But he will never be the same for turkey hunting.  I will never get him to go camp in a tent and hike the hills for turkeys again. I know him, he is spoiled now.

Still have lots of birds but we are finished with our turkey hunters now. I've had seasons with a lot more hunters, but this year we had the highest success rate ever, we finished with our guided hunters taking 1.62 birds per hunter average.  :)

Getting ready to start bear hunting, one bear was seen yesterday and another bear was spotted today. I think we are going to have a great bear hunt.

Figured you would start seeing bear as soon as I left :bash:  Was just looking too green for them not to be getting out even with the cold nights.  Hopefully they will be really getting out by the time I get back out there.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Bill had a good bear at 40 yards for several minutes today, bear just kept eating grass, but Bill was turkey hunting.  :bash:

He got some pics, I'll get one from him and post it tomorrow. Hunting should be much better for bear when you come back Radsav.

Bill also whacked a good bird this morning with an 8.5 inch beard, weighed about 15 to 16 pounds. When he ran up it tried to get away, he had to shoot again, the shot killed the bird but also hit the tail and cleaned every one of the tail feathers off. Fortunately he has killed lots of birds and did not need a mount.  :chuckle:

Here's the bear that Bill saw while out turkey hunting yesterday, it was feeding on greens at 40 yards, he watched it for several minutes.

Last night he showed the photo to an unguided bear hunter (Chad) who was staying at our place. So Chad and his partner went there this morning at daybreak, lady luck was in his favor, a nice black bear, very possibly the same bear, was in the exact same location focused on eating greens.

Chad smoked this average sized blackie at 30 yards, a 1 shot kill, congrats to Chad, the first bear in camp for 2013.

Hanging photo is deceiving, but a nice average blackie...  ;)

Have another bear hunter coming tonight. I sent Bill, the unguided turkey hunter in camp, looking for turkeys in another location this morning and he saw another bear this morning, I'm anxious to go bear hunting!  :)

Bearpaw Season -Spring 2013

Thank you very much for all your help Dale, that was everything I could have asked for in a hunt, a warm place to sleep, shower, meals prepared and having never stepped foot into that unit it was a huge asset to be able to gain the knowledge of the area and the animals from someone who knows it so well. I will be back!

We covered a ton of ground in the two full days we were there and although we didn't see a ton of bear sign the stuff we saw was very fresh so I think things are just about to get going.

Thanks for posting your photos sirmissalot, it was a pleasure having you here for your hunt, we all look forward to seeing you again.

We saw a nice bear yesterday morning but he was too fast for us, later in the day he pooped in our tracks after we left.  :chuckle:  I am going back and checking on him once or twice every day, he is laying the best size pile we've seen. Also hunting another bear that has left 13 piles in a 1/2 acre pasture, so he should be back sooner or later.

How cool is that???

An "Unguided" hunter gets the tip of where to go and success!

Dale, you could have set him up a little better so he didn't have to shoot so far  :chuckle:

We have been hunting hard, it snowed yesterday and there was 8 inches on the ground up high in the morning. During the snowstorm we ran into a black wolf, he sat down on his haunches and looked at us, I had my 15x binos on him for several minutes, he was definitely a black wolf, finally he stood up and walked off.

We missed a bear twice day before yesterday in the evening. We saw a 140ish bear yesterday afternoon that we passed and was in lots of bear sign this morning but didn't see any bear yet today.

Yesterday saw a cow elk with a newborn calf, couldn't believe how tiny it was. This morning we saw a mule deer doe with two newborn fawns, the one fawn couldn't walk or hold his ears up yet, maybe the other fawn was born first, he could walk a little better. We took photos and left them be, thankfully they were far from the wolf.

Headed back out hunting now.

PM sent to Killmore.

Yesterday afternoon we went back out hunting after lunch and passed two bear, first a blackie which was only 20 yards away from us. He liked posing so much for the cameras I nicknamed him the "circus bear". Later in the evening we saw a small blonde sow and we passed her too. This morning we saw another bear at about 11 am and we finished the hunt. Not the biggest bear, in fact about the smallest we saw on the hunt, but it was the last day of the hunt. We saw a lot of cool things on this hunt but a big bear just didn't seem to be in the cards on this hunt.

After I finished skinning the bear, at 4 pm this afternoon my next hunter arrived and we decided to hunt the last few hours this evening. Right away we spotted about a 200ish cinnamon bear, but as luck would have it a trail biker with a loud exhaust spooked the bear, if we would have had a couple more seconds I would probably be posting more dead bear pictures. We did get to see the cinnamon bear again but still couldn't get a shot, we will be looking for that bear again tomorrow.

1st-3rd photos are the "circus bear" next is the blonde sow, both were seen yesterday, last is the blackie that we shot today. Sorry I wasn't quick enough to get pics of the cinnamon bear this evening.
