anyone use a galaxy s2 for gps while huntin?
« on: April 05, 2013, 08:32:24 PM »
i need a gps for elk hunting this year.ive been doing my research.i want a good unit and it seems im looking at spending around 300 bucks to get a decent setup.
while i was at the bighorn show there was a booth with folks talking about map programs for smart phones.i just got my old lady the galaxy s2 and am thinking that if it will work well for hunting i will pick one up too.
i just dont know much of anything about this stuff n do not know how well it will work for me.

so does the gps satellite work even if you dont have service? and are the sweet map programs available on it?like the ones that show you boundary lines?

You can get apps that you can download the maps to your phone before you go out. Then they work good without service. The only problem is the GPS sucks the battery very fast on phones. I think the galaxy 2 has quite a small battery so that may be a consideration. I use my android phone in the woods as a gps all the time.

These guys have apps where the GPS works without cell svc. I have it on my iphone and it works well but drains the battery quickly. I think the Gps function has its place but I don't think its a replacement for a true GPS.

If a phone has a built in GPS, which most including the S2 do, it works without cellular service. The mapping application, however, may need cellular service to display maps of your location.

I use my nexus in the woods. Google maps now allows you to save map data for use in non service areas. The GPS still works. I usually know my phone won't have service and save maps of several locations. I believe you need to save twice if you want satellite and contour views. Turn your mobile network off so its not trying find service. That drains the battery quick also. Something else worth mentioning is if you are a Verizon customer I don't think the GPS will work off network without rooting. If you have the GSM s2 you should have no issues.
