Long awaited Canada Moose hunt..
«

Headed out tomorrow morning for the long drive to Grande Prairie, Alberta for a Moose hunt that my buddy and I booked in February of last year. We'll meet the outfitter on Sunday afternoon and head for camp about 2 hours further north and begin hunting Monday morning. It's a full 8 day hunt and I will be rifle hunting. Needless to say I am getting a bit ragged around the edges from the anticipation. Anyone who has booked a hunt out of country knows what I mean, seems a long ways off when you book it then suddenly the last month just flys by and it's here. Anyway, I'll let you guys know with pics and a story when I return how it went. Good luck to all hunting locally or off on other trips.

Knock over a big one. Wish I had the chance. Not unless I hit lotto, or the wife leaves me.

Well it was a great hunt, terrific guides and outfitter whom I would recommend to anyone. Great food and terrific camaraderie around the campfire and the outfitters and guides work their tails off and truly want you to kill a Moose you'll be very happy with. The hunting was mostly walking gas pipelines and calling and glassing and spot and stalk. We had passed on several bulls that we had called in that had been in the 35-40" class and I was kind of regretting the passing on the bull that was 40", but I also knew that the area held some truly terrific bulls as they had killed some real good bulls in the past.
To be honest the killing of my bull was somewhat anti-climactic. It was the morning of the fourth day and we had just walked a gas pipeline probably 2-3 miles first thing in the morning and and had passed on a small bull, we had come back to the truck to go to another spot as the guide felt we could get on top of a ridge and walk some big cut blocks with fingers of gas lines running off of them, we hadn't driven 500 yards when through the trees I saw the back half of a Moose on the edge of a cut block we were coming to. He was heading up the hill in the direction we had just left and was probably slowly coming to where we had been calling. I bailed out of the truck and as I headed thru the ditch he kind of turned his head around and I realized he was a shooter without hesitation, I found an opening through the timber and hit him angling away, hit the last rib on the near side and exited just in front of the offside shoulder. He disappeared from view as he bolted and there was no chance for a second shot. I had heard the bullet hit and felt I made a good shot. We gave him a couple minutes and headed down to find him. He had made a 30 yard death sprint. My 325wsm with 200gr Nosler accubonds did a number on him and when I gutted him I had caught the liver and the lungs were jelly.
My buddy killed his bull that same night and we were hunting a cut block when we simply spotted him with a couple cows. My buddy made a great shot and we both ended up with a couple of great animals. Hope you enjoy the pics. It was a great trip. My bull measured 54 7/8" width and the outfitter who scores for the APOS organization scored him at 183 1/8" net, now obviously thats before drying, but he just misses the book, but that doesn't concern me and I couldn't be happier with my bull and my buddies bull. My buddies bull is 51 3/8" wide. The last picture in the group is the group of four bulls that we had all taken in a 24 hour period. Starting upper left and going clockwise is me at 55", my buddy at 51", then a guy from Wisconsin at 54", and then his buddy from Wisconsin at 49". It was a very long night with a lot of Kokanee and whiskey that night around the campfire after all bulls had been retrieved.
