First foam decoys float test!!
« on: April 08, 2013, 03:28:26 PM »
Finally got my first two foam decoys completely carved, painted, clear coated, and dried so I got to test them out! I think they turned out awesome!! It was very calm and since they have no keel they swam around with even the slightest breeze   :)

Depends on the bird. Carving doesn't take too long(maybe an hour ish, but I get faster with each bird), but there's lots of waiting time in the trestle coating process. Paint time depends on the species... GWT takes MUCH more time to paint than a Ringneck does.

Nice job! Are they hollowed out on the bottom? If they aren't weighted or hollowed out the stronger wind gusts will blow them over. I have some Herters that are hollowed out Styrofoam with a hard coat on the outsides they float nice and the slightest breeze moves them around good.

I actually have no idea what kind of foam :dunno: I found it at an architectural salvage place.

I've hollowed out a circle on the bottom to prevent exactly that  :) I've had lots of help from the wonderful people on a couple foam decoy forums or I never would have thought about the bottoms! They certainly move around with the slightest breeze!

Those are awesome. It'll be really cool when you bring some ducks in to 'em.

That's the thought that keeps me going when I can't get the foam dust off me, even after I shower  :chuckle: I caved and bought a respirator so at least I'm not coughing up foam dust anymore haha

This sounds like a fun project...

It really is!! I love that I can create whatever species in whatever pose I want.  Plus there's the whole part about hunting with something you made makes it that much more awesome  :)
