A Bolt
« on: April 09, 2013, 03:46:53 PM »
Thought I'd post my hunting rifle for the next couple years. Its not my rifle but I have been allowed to use it for a while so I decided to put some upgrades on it. I cant wait to use it in the backcountry but I'm also excited to try it on targets/steel.

Browning A-bolt 280 Rem
Bell and Carlson Medalist
Timney 3 lb Trigger Spring
EGW rail and mounts
Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x50 M1 TMR

That timney spring is a nice upgrade. Love those A-Bolts.

I  have the 280 in a stainless stalker. awesome gun without the upgrades. should be a really good one for you. there is just something about that 284 cal bullet that kicks butt. I load 160 speer grand slams with imr 7828 and cci mag primers. cant go wrong.   good choice.
is it tweeker season yet?

I think I'd try 140 or 150 grain Nosler Accubonds. Or, possibly a Barnes bullet, probably in 140 grain, especially if you plan on shooting elk with it.

My .280 likes 140 grain Hornady GMX. I don't reload and am shooting the superformance ammo from Hornady.

I got some sst from cabelas today. They didn't have any gmx unfortunately.
I plan on using the rifle for bear and deer unless I gets extremely lucky with an oil or find the time and money to go to Idaho or Montana for elk.

For high country critters, any of the above would be great choices! Try several different ones and see what you can wring out for accuracy...that would be your load! :-)
