Skagit cougar
« on: October 09, 2008, 07:19:04 PM »
A friend of mine had her dog killed by a cougar last night. Apparently they have lost some chickens also very recently. She asked me to come out and try to kill it. I am not really sure the best way to go about this. I saw the posts on another thread about calling them in. Does a certain type or brand of call work better? Are cougars highly territorial? Do they return to the scene of the crime? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, the dog was a german shepherd so it was pretty big. Thanks.

So the local warden came out that afternoon with a tracker and they couldn't really determine if it was a cougar or not. There was blood in a few spots but the wounds on the dog were not really in line with a cougar attack. The next day a guy that lives a mile or so away notices his horses acting strangely so he goes to investigate. He finds the cougar alive, layed up in some tall grass in his pasture. The cougar then developed an acute case of lead poisoning. While examining the cougar he finds that it is really torn up and had probably been layin there for awhile. The warden and trackers determine that the reason it didn't look like a cougar attack was because the dog had actually attacked the cougar and tore him up pretty good before getting killed. It's still a hell of a way to lose a pet but the family feels a little better knowing he died defending their farm and wasn't just a cougar kill. Thanks to you guys that replied.
