Happy Moose Client

Well Like everyone else the hunt started out way to hot. I went to my hot spot were the bulls were rutting hard the week before and no fresh sign. I Went to my next spot there had been a bull working the area with  in the past few hours but didn't get any grunts. This happened for the first two days I was really starting to worry. Because all we had seen the first two days was cows and calf's. Seen nine cows in the first two days but no bulls. Well on the third day we awoke to rain which is perfect for moose they love the rain The front that moved in got them fired up. Got to my hotspot only to find another hunter there calling so we moved down the hill. stopped and call in a few spot lots of fresh sign but no grunts. At this point I was hoping that my client didn't think that I was blowing smoke up his @$$. Well the next spot was a few miles away and on anther road system so we were in route to that spot when we seen our first bull run across the road in front of us. I stop my jeep and made a few cow calls stopping the bull in the timber about 30 yards off of the road. Rob aka my client and I slowly moved up the hillside into the timber were the bull was standing less then 30 yards from use we looked him over really well he was a really nice bull. It was really cool to watch him make a rut pit 30 yards in front of us. That bull must have had close to a gallon of piss  He dung up the ground peed for like close to 2 minutes. then laid down in it and rolled all around. the bulls was around 46 inches wide had five up top on his right side and one broken tine right above his single brow. On his left side he had five on top and still a tine above the brow he was split on thus side so he would have been a 7x8 nice bull but pass on him only third day of a 5 day hunt. Came home for lunch and a nap and headed back out around 2:30. Hunted till about 4:30 and parked walked down a old logging road I let out some cow calls and bull grunts with no responses. We were almost to my jeep and we got a bull to answer us. I sent rob up the road to the main road were the bull was calling from and I continued to call from down below I call for about 5 minute s and the bull came out above me on the main road at about 80 yards. he was such a great bull on his left side but a dink on the right he was 50" wide had 9 points on top a long dagger point above the split brows total of 12 points and had about 10 inches of palm. but he only had 6 points. passed on him as well. drove down the road to the next landing and gave a few calls and had another bull right before dark I called for a few minutes and we got him to show him self in a clear cut about 400 yards across a canyon.  He was too small as well only had six point on a side and single brows. so we passed up early once again day four started off great. Woke up to heavy rain and fog which the moose like any how first place we got to we walked down a gated road and got a call at first light work him for about 45 minutes but couldn't get a shot just to thick. So we went up the road and did a few more calls with no luck. Then we got a hot bull to grunt at us. I let out a few cow calls and the bull started grunting and grunting and coming fast. the wind was blowing in the fog and then blowing it back out. could see him in any of the openings so I told Rob my client to to try and put a stock on him because he hung up and was raking trees. I kept the bull talking so Rob could put the stock on him. I waited about five minutes and gave a few long cow calls and the bull came crashing towards me. and Rob was in between the moose and myself. I let out one more call and then two quick shots. And then Rob scream I got him!!!!!!! I got him!!!!!! Turns out that Rob saw the bull coming through the alders and got down on one knee the bull walked by him at FIVE FEET yeah i know holy crap he shot him in the shoulder and got one more in the same shoulder with a shot from him hip. The bull was down about 100 yards above the road. We lucked out as you can see from the picture we had a very nice muzzleloader loans his Toyota with a winch and 100 foot of cable. So no pack for us we dragged the bull to the edge of the road. backed the truck to the edge of the bank and loaded him whole. The moose had some weird hoofs. on the front hoofs each hoof had one side that was 3 times longer the the other one I took a picture. Sorry the only picture I have right now is from my phone. I gross scored him at 158 with only a 38 inch spread. had 13
 So Bull one down. One more to go next clients hunt starts tomorrow. sorry the only picture have right now is from my phone. I gross scored him at 158 with only a 38 inch spread. Had 13 points on the right side and 12 on the left with one broken point. Palm's were just short of 14 inches wide and the other was just short of 12 inches. palm's were little over 40 inches each.

That is a wicked looking hoof!!!

More than anything else, I like the position of that animal just "ABOVE" the road. That had to be a sweet recovery.

Glad your client is happy with a great bull.  I think you are a bit over with your score but thats OK, guides often are.   I only say that because there is a gal on here with a true 160 class bull and she deserves the credit. Thanks for your write up!  Hope to see more pics, maybe I am wrong.

From the picture, I can see why you are saying that Bone.  It does seem an odd angle to judge them at.  The palm length and width seemed high, but would love to see some other pictures.  Nice story and write up.  Great bull.  Who cares about score.
