Carpsniperg2: Archery Tom Down
«

Well I missed the opener because of work. So I wanted to give them hell today. Morning was a little slow after bumping the birds first thing off the bat
Waited tell mid day and headed to my favorite intersection where 3 canyons come together. Most of the time the birds are passing threw but every once in awhile a bigger tom will setup camp as a strut zone. When I came to the bottom before I got to the area they strut in I let a few sleazy yelps out with Jason's grey mouth call. Bam this tom when off like thunder. Every time I opened my mouth with this call toms and jakes would pipe off.
Jason if you do not have a name for this call. I am calling it the "Bar Fly"!!! A little raspy voice, very sleazy! and all the guys want to at least make a pass at her
I have killed more then a few birds with my bow and more then a couple in this same spot. So I stalked into my spot where I setup behind a blown down tree. It is a perfect spot because the birds when called to come in from left to right and the roots on the tree block my draw very well. Played out like it has many times before. Got settled and started to sell him with the "bar fly" he decided that there was no other ladies around and he would be happy to take her home! He came in as pretty as could be drumming almost all the way in, only to pause and gobble every time I opened my mouth.
There is some brush at like 30 yards and all the birds always seem to come on the close side of it. For some reason he decided to walk around the back side. So I was guessing a little on my yardage and didn't want to move to range him. When he cleared the edge of the brush he was in the shooting zone and I let her fly. I gussed him at 40y which is a bit farther then I like to shoot on such small targets. Well he must have been a little closer or I rocked on the shot. It went high. I like to shoot my birds at the top of the legs threw the hips. I shot about 4 inches high and hit him more threw the wish bone and neck. It dropped him in his tracks but I was still a little off my mark.
Nice bird with a nice beard and spurs. Nothing to crazy but a nice bird and a great hunt all around.

Thanks guys. Yeah number 2 will be in the works. I have 2 other hunts coming up so I won't have as much free time to spend turkey hunting. That being said with the longer season I will try to squeeze a 2nd bird in.

Nice one. Must be nice, I was planning on going as well, but tied up with work, baseball and soccer. No time.

Good job Matt. We have had some action and two kills. I have to take the day off from hunting and go into work for part of the day. I am loving my Phelps calls. I have called in several toms and some hens. Like stated its hard to call in hens but with these calls I am doing it. We need to get together this week for lunch and tell some hunting stories. Hope to see you at the banquet Saturday.
