iPhone 4S SD card reader?
« on: April 18, 2013, 08:37:59 AM »
Just got my first trail cam. Moultrie M-880 with lock box and a python lock. I got a 32 gig SD card for it. Expensive little guy! which is why I'd like to be able to view pics in the field instead of buying a separate SD card to swap in there.

Does anybody use any of the iPhone compatible SD readers with success? Thanks for any help. I'm pretty excited about the camera. I set it up in the living room today so I can see what the Dog and cats do while we're away. Haha.

I don't think you can do it with the iPhone or at least I have never had it work out for me.  I know you can do it with an ipad but would really like to do it on my phone.  Tagging with hopes of someone having a solution.

My wife ordered me a card reader that we thought would work in my iPhone, but it doesn't, it only works in the iPad.

So I have the option of carrying the iPad when I check my trail cams, or my laptop.

I sure wish there was a way to do it on the iPhone. I did a little research but could not find any card readers that are made for that purpose.

I've heard there is one that works for the iPhone when paired with an App called ZoomedIn or something.

I guess there's a reader for the iPhone called ZoomIt but it's $60. I'll just plan on getting a 2nd SD card and toting the digital camera with me, unless someone chimes in with a solution on here...

Here is the solution.  First off when buying a SD card for your trail cam get a micor SD card with a SD adapter.  Most phones use the micor SD card.  Just slip the micro into the adpater and it is now a standard SD card that can to into your trail cam.  I hope this is what your all thinking of.

does the Iphone 4s have a micro sd port? I have a 4s and to my knowledge the only ports on the phone are a 3.5mm headphone jack and the charger port.

just cause i have the phone doesnt mean i know the answer, my phone rarely comes out of the otter box

iPhones do not have SD ports. this is why I'm looking for an iPhone compatible SD reader that allows me to view trail cam pics on my phone while in the field.

Just get another SD card, they are cheap, And swap them out.

 :yeah:

No need for a 32gb card either. You could probably put about a gazillion pictures on that.

I like the old phone idea. I do have an old Droid with an SD slot. However, I wouldn't be able to save the pics and email them to myself.

As far as SD card size goes, 32 is way more than I need? Should I just get another one that's 16GB or even smaller? I plan on doing one week soaks and I'm setting the camera to 4 megapixel instead of 8 to keep file sizes down.

It varies greatly but I bet you might put 1000 trail cam pics on a 4gb card...I bought 8gb cards for mine and assume they are overkill.

My sister uses a battery powered SD card reader/Photo USB storage device with LCD display to view and store her photos from her photo shoots until she gets back home to transfer to PC.
But that would probably cost as much as the camera.

i dont know how well this translates but for reference sake, i run 8gb cards in my DSLR and if i set the camera to take fine quality 4.5mp jpegs the camera estimates the card will hold just over 2900 images 4.5mp set to course quality its just over 6000 images bump that up to 18mp on RAW its about 270 images

Ok. Sounds like I'll be fine with much smaller cards then. I'll just have to be extra careful to remove branches and things that could trigger the sensor and give me loads of landscape pics.

Now, back to an iPhone compatible SD reader...I called the local Apple store and it turns out that Apple does not make one for iPhones. Only iPads. However, there are some third party companies that make them such as the ZoomIt adapter I referenced earlier. I'm hoping someone has found one that works. it would just be so handy. Now that I think about it, I'd say it would be worth the money even if it were $50 or $60.

After reviewing the trail cam pics it is confirmed that my dog sleeps on the couch all day, moving only to sleep on the chair. Haha. at least I know my camera works. can't wait to put it in the woods.

The biggest sd cards I have are 4 GB. My others are 2 GB. Both hold more than enough pictures. The only time I ever had an issue was last fall when I got busy during elk season, and didn't check one of my cameras for about 6 weeks. It was a 2 GB card and it filled up, with just under 3,000 pictures. I can't imagine ever needing more than a 4 GB card, unless you live a long ways from your cameras and can't check them often.

I do have two cards for every camera so I can just swap out cards, and I can look at the pictures when I get home. I do have a digital camera that I always have in my pack, but it doesn't work with sd cards bigger than 2 GB. Which is why I normally prefer to use the 2 GB cards, so that at least I have the option of viewing pictures while I'm in the woods.

The iPhone has a much bigger screen and if there was any way to use my phone to view pictures, it would easily be worth $50 or $60 for me as well.

Wow. At $5.00 I think I'll just go ahead and order it. Haha although I may go have a look at best buy before hand.

I was thinking the same thing. Makes me skeptical but it's damn cheap. I wonder if there's an app to run it though?

This may be worth a try

http://www.miniinthebox.com/sd-card-reader-for-the-new-ipad-ipad-2-and-iphones_p296616.html#description

My 1st concern is if the Apple one doesn't work with the iPhone but works with the iPad, how does this one work with all of them? In other words if there's something different about the devices that makes Apple's stuff not work with all of them, how does the aftermarket get around that.
