AR guys help me out
« on: April 18, 2013, 11:27:06 PM »
I am building an AR, this is what I got (or in the mail):
-DPMS lower build kit
-DPMS Upper
-20 inch barrel with front sight gas block.
-Bottom half of a quad rail

Need to get:
-Bolt Carrier group
-Charging handle
-Gas tube
-Either rifle length hand guards or free float system
-Carry handle

My questions:
-What else do I need that is not listed above?
-Do I need a buffer tube or does that come with my lower build kit?
-Do I need a delta ring assemby?
-Should I get a free float rail system?

Use of Rifle:
-Killin little critters
-Pliniking
-Quazi home defense

Thanks in advance for your help!

buffer tube should be included in the lower.
I think free float rails are best when doing a match type set up.  You said it will have a 20 inch barrel, but what twist?

1 in 7 will be better with a heavier bullet, 55gr and lighter will not work as well.

The only ammo I would have reservations shooting in a 1/7" twist would be the light (40gr and 45gr) thin jacket bullets (Sierra's Blitz, Hornady's SX and V-Max). Other than these, let the bullets fly!  While the 62-90gr is more ideal for a 1/7" you'll be fine with 55gr FMJ unless you plan on shooting extremely long distances.  I put thousands of rounds through my rifles each year with no problems shooting the 55gr FMJ.

Barrel nut, delta ring, a new trigger? armorers wrench and action block...

I have a Yankee Hill Machine Brake (Phantom YHM-28-5M) and love mine... Its comes in a tactical aggressive style and a snag free style.  I have the aggressive one, which is pretty sharp for a more hand-to-hand situation.  It would really hurt to get hit in the face with that thing, would probably take a nice chunk right out of a bone.

But it will put a hole in your sheetrock from walking down the hall and bumping into the wall when you turn around... Ask me how I know...  :yike: Even worse when the wife finds the nice star shaped hole..  oops :bash:  Its not so sharp though that it will cut you, just sharp enough that it will make some good sized holes...

Anyway, on the compensation end of it... It keeps my barrel straight and on target even during rapid fire.  Double tapps are right about 1/2" apart... It really a nice compensator.  The snag-free version is exactly the same compensation wise without the face gouging spikes... The other nice thing that for critters, if you are shooting prone the bottom not cut out... So you aren't kicking up dust and debris

Price wise it's an awesome brake for $35 and beats the hell out of the stock birdcage style...Here is a link to them both... http://yhm.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_7&products_id=103

I've been using the Rainier Arms XTC on anything I don't use a quick detach suppressor mount on. They work well and aren't to obnoxious when a quick shot at a coyote is needed without hearing protection.
