Yeah, I don't get that either.  Seems like there is getting to be more and more of them..

I dont understand it either. I saw 100 plus cows in the time I hunted over there and like I said all but 2 of them had calves, keep in mind that I only hunted the 49DN area. I'm quite sure the numbers are increasing in the other units as well. Maybe there is some way they can tell how many of these calves are young bulls and the bull to cow ratio is not high enough :dunno:

Assuming they make it through the winter there should be 5X the amount of 1 year old moose than tags given out the next three years if these numbers are duplicated, and obviously I didn't see all of the calves in the unit :twocents:

There are moose even starting to show up down here where I live.  Just had one in the alphafa field next to my house a month and a half ago.  My 9 year old called me at work all excited.  Wanted to know if I put in for a moose tag down here...

There is one bright spot.  The tag numbers aren't necessarily adjusted for 3 years.  We've had permit number adjustments every year over the past 3 years, even when new 3 year proposals aren't up.

Thats right I forgot about that. Still it makes me wonder what their justification is for less moose permits this year when I personally saw 90+ calves last year. :dunno:

If you have photo documentation of each and every calf you should email them to WDFW w/ a complaint letter about the tag numbers, that would be funny.

My grandfather once paid off his mortgage for a piece of property he purchased with a couple of briefcases full of silver dollars.  My point is that a couple of briefcases full of moose photos along with your written letter of why the number of tags is decreasing would probably be a conversation starter.

I will never draw again whacker and I suppose I could just sit back and laugh about it but the truth is it really bothers me when they do things that make absolutely no sense when you look at the numbers.

Well I can understand the sheep tags being reduced this year, the herds are declining but to be honest I have no idea whats going on with the goats :dunno:

:yeah: I don't think they know for sure what's out there!

I don't either and I honestly believe they take the hunters word for it. I was out there 27 days and never ran into one game cop or F&W biologist. Instead they rely on the harvest questionare in which they asked how many day hunted, how many cows did you see, how many calves did you see etc. I answered 100+ for cows and calves and I'll bet they tossed the info thinking I was BSing them when in fact I really did see that many :dunno:

I was told a couple years ago by a WDFW biologist out of Yakima that the cougars are killing lots of mountain goats. He says the goats are a favorite species of prey for the cats. Must be easy to jump off a cliff onto the back of an unsuspecting goat.
