Just bought a custom 300 RUM, going to get plenty of practice with it and hopefully get time to go to Idaho this fall.

Longest on a deer was 368 with my 243... DRT... I wouldn't have taken the shot but when I ranged him it said 292... Those were branches or brush in front of him at the time in my haste to get it done.... Now yotes are a different story...  :chuckle:  536 with the same 243...

Unfortunately, at least 80% of hunters believe they are above average marksmen.  In my experience (15 seasons in the field checking and talking to hunters), the majority of ethical hunters learn to limit their shots after wounding and losing an animal.  The unethical ones just keep banging away beyond their level of competence.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Dang horrible hunter if 1000 yards is close as a guy can get and in my opinion pretty disrespectful to the animal and other hunters to "want" to shoot that far.

shoot 1000 yards at the range, "HUNT" when you're hunting. :twocents:

I guess everyone draws the line at a different spot but I always feel I owe it to myself, other sportsman, and the animal to get as close as possible and then only take ethical shots.

Jake, 1000 yards where we hunt would be 3 days getting to it. LOL

Main reason for the RUM purchase is being active duty and in training, I am very limited on time. If I can get to Idaho I can't be too picky on shots, as long as I'm confident in it, and with the 270 would only reach out to 250-300 max. Some of the areas I hunt can easily go 300-500+ without an opportunity to get closer. Then say it is 450, I don't want to have to wait for a perfect broadside or quartering away. Not looking for a 900 yard elk kill, but want to thump it hard at any, ethical, angle to 500 yards. Now... 180 Accubonds or 200s... We'll see...

Even with my 7mm Weatherby Mag I don't think I'd be shooting at a deer much past 400 unless everything was perfect... But we know how that goes...

While I somewhat understand what you are saying, I think your word choice could have been a little better.   :dunno:

I see your point. Of course given the chance I'd certainly prefer a broadside or quartering away, but sometimes they just aren't presented. And no way I'd ever take a Texas heart shot or anything like that. As far as range, can't say with the new rifle till I play with it and see how it does.

whats the velocity of a 7 mag at 1000? I would bet it wouldnt kill a deer at 1000 yards. It may wound the animal but I dont think it would kill it.

This thread is pretty entertaining to say the least. If you gotta question if you can make the shot, then you probably shouldn't take it.

:yeah: with most gun and ammo combinations these days it is not an issue of the bulllet having enough energy to kill the animal as much an issue of actually hitting the vitals atextended ranges.
Fwiw my longest deer kill with a rifle is 380 yards with my 243.

Well, you could do a test. Measure out 1000 yards and have a friend shoot you in the chest. That should give you a better idea of what a bullet out of a 7 Mag feels like at 1000 yards.

I'm pretty sure it will just bounce off, but don't quote me on that.  :dunno:

At 27" station pressure (Say around Wenatchee) and 60*, a 168 VLD at 3050 fps MV has 1235 ft lbs of energy, velocity of 1819.8 fps, and a 1.274 time of flight (seconds)...  Pretty sure that'd rock your world to the point of DRT...

I took one Texas heart shot with the 7mm Weatherby Mag... I jumped a buck in close cover on the last day of late buck... It was just a reaction shot... I can honestly tell you I'd never do that again unless it was charging me with it's ass... DRT but what a freaking mess...
