Colville a Bust
« on: April 21, 2013, 11:08:49 AM »
Made a mad dash for Colville Friday night from Marysville. Drove straight through and made it there for shooting time. Saw lots of hens but nothing was responding to my calls. Finally found 2 Toms with 4 hens but they were in a residential area. Talked to a lot of hunters out there and they had the same issues. Left around 1pm and finally got home around 8pm. I guess those turkeys are not horny yet  :dunno:

I guess it was not a total loss, I picked up my goose mount from Willow Creek Taxidermy and met some good people, Ill post a pic in the taxi section.

The wife an I in Colville yesterday calling in some birds.

We hunted last Monday through yesterday with the same issue.  We got two for the four of us.  Basically ambushes, with toms basically just walking in the wrong place.  Lots of toms talking to us, they just wouldn't come in.

Just got back from there last night a little south of you guys and was not able to hear didley.  Do you think the weather was the factor or are they just not talking much yet?  Never found a honey hole but covered enough country we should have at least heard a few?   :dunno:

Birds around us were still very henned up and I don't beleive any were nested yet.  Also, we did'nt see very many jakes at all and they account for a lot of the noise you hear.  Funny year in that places that normally hold birds were completely dry and couple of places that usually don't hold birds had birds. Snow was real spotty this winter with variances of as much as 2' just a couple of miles apart.  I'm kinda thinking the birds just moved to the areas that did'nt get the heavier snow and just kinda stayed there.  We also saw toms with an inordinate amount of hems with them - one big tom had 14 hens with him-I usually don't see just one bird with that many hens and no other toms or jakes on the fringes of the group.  Guys I spoke to kinda of said the same thing, when they found an area with birds there were quite a few, but some of their typical spots were completely dry.

Yeah the birds over in your area will follow the snow lines to get some of that fresh new crub popping up but then they come back down to the low lands ...But from what I am hearing some of the guys are doing great and are not ...  It only gets better the way I see it !!

Went out Saturday with my brother to our honey hole. Just like on the opener there were no birds visible.
For years this place was crawling with turkeys, but something has really changed there habits. We think some type of predator is involved.
(we did see 2 turkey kill spots where the major roosting used to take place)
We did manage to locate some birds waaaay back in the woods, maybe a mile from where they used to hold.
We also heard some gobbling, but not much.
We set up working a couple of birds in a very bad location - it was asking too much of this Tom to cross the jungle that separated us. :bash:
At least we know the birds are still in the area and my worst day of hunting sure beats my best day at work. :)

No problems here. Tagged out on opening day on public land.  Did notice they were a little quieter than other years but had no trouble getting into birds.  If I may ask, are you hunting in the National Forrest or on Refuge land?

Nice job Turkeyspark, glad to see somebody had some luck.

Can't even get the Wife to let me go....man, so controlling.  :bash:

Wind blew hard this past weekend, with a bit of rain here and there. The sun shown out earlier, and is shining today, but the wind is still blowing.

Hope my boys at least get out this weekend!
