Here is a slideshow I put together a couple years back.  The slides may help those that have never completed this process.  It doesn't have to be an all or nothing process.  You can skip the full on washing and/or full separation of the fan if you prefer.  Bondo does a better job for me and is much quicker than pinning and drying.  The removal of flesh and fat makes a cleaner mount.  Its a process I used when I had a taxidermy shop.
