3 Birds Down ...1 dANDY ...THANKS TO Jason Phelps !!!!!!!
« on: April 27, 2013, 11:44:25 AM »
So we returned lastnight from one of the best hunts we have been on for only hunting 2.5 days ...We roll into camp around 1pm Weds. and get all set up by 1:30 or So ...I tell the boys you can head up the hill out of camp while I take a little nap ....So they head up the hill while I sit in the truck talking to the wife ...After about 15 minutes or so I am sitting there and I hear BOOOOM !!! WTH ? I tell the wife I just heard a shot ...her response was you best go check on those boys  :dunno: :chuckle: I jump out of my truck and start heading up the hill and as I start up there I hear all kinds of yelling and all kinda excitement going on ...I start running up the hill and here they come screaming at me ...Dad we just rolled a big one  :yike:  :dunno: :chuckle: Yeah they did and if I was out of my truck talking to the wife I would of heard the whole thing go down ..As they crested the ridge Ted let out a couple yelps and GOBBLE GOBBLE ..tHEY SIT DOWN QUICK and end of story !! This was pretty cool for me because it is the 1st Gobbler they killed on their own without dad on their side !!! Can not beat being in turkey camp and big BBD in a matter of minutes being in camp !

1ST DAY IN CAMP !  We have more to tell when I get time ....

O.k Now this 3 rd day is along one  :chuckle: So here it is Friday morning I try to wake up the boys at 3:30 am .. I slap - kick and scream to get your arzes out of bed ...They are tired from yesterday  :dunno: All I can get is HUH  :dunno: Back to sawing logs they go  :bash: :bash: I tried for a half hour to wake them up but no luck ...so after about an hour later they wake up saying what the heck you did not get us up  :yike: :bdid: I said my few words and thats that ! So we finally come too and decide to hit a spot we roosted a few before going to bed that night ..We get in there and I cut once on one of Phelps calls and instantly GOBBLE GOBBLE about 100 yrds up the ridge ..so we haul butt to get up even with him ...I sit Ted in front of me about 30 yrds and Kyle off to the side of me ...we start in on him and he just goes off ....I just kept doing those Whit whits and so was Ted & Kyle and he is just going nutz ...I mean right in our face just screaming mad ... :chuckle: I look to Teds right and here he comes just going off ...Ted gets ready and as soon as he pops his head around the corner of the grade BOOOOOOM....flop flop flap flap ...those #5 3" winchesters just up ended him ..... HELLOOOOO 2 birds down and it was as picture perfect as it could get ....So we get to camp and I decide to call Bearpaw ....He picked me up some powder and primers since I could not get any here ... So we pack the birds in ice and head up to see Dale ...we finally meet Dale and I thank him for helping me out ...we told him all kinda lies  :chuckle: :chuckle: No we actually had a great time talking to him and man he has some fine trophies ...thanks again BearPaw  So dale has no idea what we were in for next So here is what went down after we met up with Dale .....

To be continued after I clean up my mess  :sry: :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: ;)

Congrats John!  Looks like a good trip

I would also like to add you guys' killed birds way before I started stretching latex.  5% call, 45% caller and 50% getting the darn birds to do what they are supposed too.

Only one down fall man ....I need more calls ...all was going great until we hiked back a couple miles one after none ....I took out my calls and set them down on the ground and guess what ???? My green call and another double was left on the ground ... :yike: :bdid: just had that dang thing sounding sweet and to do something like that just peeessses me off ...I know better than to do that !! I know alot of us have lost alot of gear doing the exact same thing !! So I was left with the Black bat wing call and I only used it twice and the second time was deadly

Final chapter on the second afternoon ...

O.K So we get done visiting and the boys are calling smack about how rusty the old man is getting  :chuckle: Yeah I hate telling the truth but I did miss once on this trip and how I have no clue ...but it happens I guess ...So we talk about what to do next ..Should we pack up and head home or hit one more spot to see if he is around where we left him the other day ...We pull up to the spot and the boys are saying how hot it is and they do not want to hike in there again when its hot so we made a sandwhich and just hung out there for awhile just listening and enjoying the sunshine ..Well as luck would have it he goes off on his own  :hello: 8) So we just hang tight a minute ...it is about 3:30pm ...he goes off about 5x in about 10 minutes . We crab our stuff and work to him ..He was hanging out in a swampy kinda area and once I got to the creek I could see Gobbler poop everywhere ...while we are slipping in on him he goes off again by himself and I know this boy is going to get whacked ..I sat in front of the boys and let them call for Pop... he is going off but not coming...we can not get no closer ...So we gave him the silent treatment for about 25 minutes and Gobble Gooble again ... I wait another 10 minutes without making another sound and GOBBLE GOBBLE AGAIN ... O.K Big Boy I reach into my fest and pull out another Phelps call ( Black Bat wing diaphram ) I clucked and cut a couple times and Gobble gobble gobble ...I now know he is a dead bird ... I picked it up a notch by cutting and he went nutz .. I called as load as I could on that diaphram and keeping him excited as I could and the boys are being quiet  :dunno: when I wanted them to join in ...But I had him so fired up he finally comes into view and struts right to me ...I let him get about 15 yrds and give us a show and decided it is time for you to take a dirt nap ...BOOOOOOM ...FLOP FLOP FLAP FLAP ... I get to him and see he was an old swamp gobbler for sure and these spurs pretty much tell the story ... It was an awesome 2 1/2 days for sure ...did not see many hens or gobblers but the ones I did find wanted to play the game ...I decided to call it after the boys calling POP RUSTY  :chuckle: :chuckle: and told them we need to pack up and header out ...lets leave on a good note with no mishaps ! Besides my stomach has been hurting the whole time and I want to go back with my buddy I took last year and the end of the season ...If I do go back I will take my bow ...This bird could of been a Mathews victum but I left her home  :bash: I do not care how I kill a turkey ..it is all about hearing the birds doing what they do best ...making thunder in the timber  So there ya go and I would recommend getting back out there if you have not bagged up yet ..they are there to be taken but you need to find them gobblers afternoon hang outs !! :twocents:

Couldn't pay one to gobble. Went to a known travel feed route cluck&purr for three hours at a stint...NADA. Fresh sign so I know they heard me???Henned up,windy and tons of boot tracks make for a hush mouth Tom. No worries though. Got a 2000acre spot lined up in Northport in a couple weeks. Taking out the guy who's Uncle owns it along with Mrs. Tamer. Hope to put them behind a couple.

Nice birds! Curious though do you throw em whole on ice so you can get group pics and not worry about the meat? We've always been skeptical and process them right away. It would be cool to get a group shot at the end of our trip with all our birds though.

In our camp...we gut them entirely and remove crop (crop can taint breast meat)..then pack cavity with ice in sanwich baggies.  We keep them in shade or in cooler. Never had a bad tasting turkey. :)

:yeah:  Thats how I do it too ...we gut them out and remove crop and pack the chest cavity full of ICE and hang them from a limb in the shade in camp ... just keep adding ice as it starts to melt ...feathers are like insulation and once you get them cooled they will stay cool as long as you keep them packed in ice ...when you go to breast them the meat will be ice cold ...just wait until I pull them from my smoker  ;) :EAT: :brew:
