Do you put in individually or group for cow tags?
« on: April 28, 2013, 08:09:44 PM »
Done the group thing this year 4 guys 14 points among us for a unit with 250 cow tags. Not sure if this is a good idea or not!  Hows the group odds look?

I've drawn cow tags in a group of 4 2 times. This was before the new draw system. Each time was with 2 pts average.

With that many tags given out, I don't think your odds will be hurt that much at all. The one thing to consider is if you guys are drawn, you will be working more than hunting, hopefully you guys can kill cows that like to hang out by the road!! I quit putting in with my elk partner for quality bull just so we could hunt insted of pack on a real quality tag, with a cow hunt, I would just go have fun. Good luck in the draw.

We would have done that slightly different. 2 groups of two partnerships with the two highest point holders together and the two lowest point holders together. If everyone draws then great, but if one pair draws this year both pair participate and split the meat. Then in the next year or two the other pair should draw and do it all over again.

I hunt in a large group and we put in separately.  Not just because we have better odds but it is fun to have a couple in camp each year instead of one year when we have a lot and then many years with none.

myself, my dad, and grandpa put in as a group. we didnt have much luck doing the individual thing, but since we have been getting tags every other year or every 3rd year. we generally put in for areas where the permit to applicant ratio is 1/4 or 1/5.

I am good with the group thing this year, I wanted to change it up. If we draw we will be busy!!  Heck I feed the cows around camp apples during hunting season!

18 points for cows, but I will ghost point untill my quality and bull tags are drawn. When I do apply it will be with a few of my buddies, make a fun trip out of it.

Can't help myself, I just want to make sure that there will be one drawing from this state that I will draw when I apply for it. I figured 18 might be enough.

I like the idea of the 2 groups of 2. Our group always applies individually, but our point structure is about perfect for that set up. Might have have to do that next year.

Applied with 2 groups in camp .  (antlerless) One with partner with max points carrying some lower pointed others......from 7 to 1(drew last year) Other with 2 members with 13 and 15 points carrying a couple 6's down to ones (last year also when I used my 16 points to help draw for lower pointed members.)  When averaged they both come out to just over 7 points.  Could be some work involved.....maybe not. With the wolves showing up in our area we figured we better get what we can while we still can

We apply individually since we only need one every other  year.  That is with all elk.  With six different draws we can hopefully keep some elk in the freezer.

Still curious why people worry about points or put in for ghost points I think yhe system is a joke.I put in the first week available for riffle cow tags when I'm not bow hunting and draw almost everytime with 0  to 1 point it almost makes it seem first come first serve. Maybe I just got lucky thelast six permits in seven years.anyone else draw with no points.

There is no way to draw with "no points".
You get a point when you apply so you always have a point going into the draw.

There is no guarantee of drawing with any number of points.

For antlerless elk in 2012 there was 1 applicant with 26 points and he did not draw. There was 1 applicant with 22 points and he did not draw. There were 3 applicants with 20 points and none drew. There were 6 applicants with 19 points and none drew. There were 2 applicants with 18 points and neither drew.

tTere is an interesting syndrome where individuals with high number of points often have worse draw odds.Tthat is because they do not wish to "waste" their points on easy to draw hunts.

The sad thing is that it's probably still not 50% odds for some of the units out there. Lol.

It was much easier to draw a cow permit before this category system they have now.  I won't even bother to apply for cow permits anymore.

Switched to individual for all my OIL tags and partnered for all Deer and Elk we have basically the same amount of points so it is a wash and if we draw quality Elk the work really begins, but all the others were antlerless or second tags

You have obviously been shattering the odds. See above posts.
IMO, it used to be that way; before the new "improved" system.

You can't draw with  0 points.  It is always 1 or more.  When u put in it says one less than what u r drawing for until u send it off, then it is 1 more than what it said before u sent it.
