wow , coyotes are tough
« on: April 28, 2013, 09:08:15 PM »
All I can say is wow this thing took a 225 grain bullet at 290 yards behind the shoulder it ran  150 yards and  just fell over dead. Everything else I shot was DRT except this thing.

I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

Looks like a high lung shot to me.  It's amazing how any animal can run as far as they do on a high lunger.

Once while hunting coyotes in August, my dad roasted a pup of a pack of four.  He shot it with a .22-250 at around 40 yards.  The 55 grain bullet entered through the shoulder and exited the opposite hip.  The path ripped a huge hole and that little dog ran over 200 yards and still needed another dose.

It crazy how much they can take. Then you hit one crapy and it just drops :dunno:

Then I pop one in the gut with a Mini-14 at like 150 and he takes a nap   :dunno:
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

But, wait, that can't be true!  I've had so many people tell me I need a super duper whiz bang magnum caliber because it kills animals with one shot - just the wind from a near miss is enough to drop deer - bear and elk will fall over sometimes just from the report...

Ok, seriously, one of those wild things that happen when things get shot.  You just never know how the animal will react...
Of sorrow and sickness I've known on my way,
But I'm old and I'm nervis,

Sounds like it's time to move up in caliber. I think that a 416 Rigby should work well as a coyote "stopping" rifle.

I hit one in the lungs with a 250gr MK out of my 338/375 pistol at about 250 yards and that critter didn't even miss a step. He made it about 60 yards before just falling over. That was one of the strangest things I'd ever seen.

Problem with such a heavy bullet is the bullet doesnt get the chance to expand at all. It basically is just punching a hole through it, so the SHOCK isnt there like it is with a smaller bullet thats expanding RAPIDLY

My son has been using his deer rifle with great success on yotes out to 300yds. (270win)  Kinda over kill  :chuckle: with 130's so we're looking for some 90gn bullets. But yes, they can take a hit once in a while and you just wonder what the heck?
