I think the guy quickly deleted it as he shouldn't have had it in possession.

If I found a band on a dead owl I would leave it alone or call fish and game and follow their instructions about what to do.

If I found a dead banded owl, I would take the band, and call it in when I got home and leave the owl there.   Some you boys need to get up to date on some laws before running your mouth.

The owl was pictured at his residence with the band on it.  This is why it was deleted.

How do the above posts mention anything about the laws.  A few recommendations of what they would do.  Maybe read the posts before you think out loud!

Then instead of running your mouth, tell us the laws about owls?

My understanding is people can't even touch an owl dead or alive and no one can't remove a band with out touching it.  So I would give every opportunity for fish and game to get the owl to examine it so they can't accuse me of killing it just for the band.  Owls, hawks, falcons, and eagles are nothing to mess with because the law is the average citizen has no business handling them.  We can't even have a feather off one of these birds.

If you are in the US, it is not legal to have the owl feathers. All native migratory birds in the US are protected by federal law (Migratory Bird Treaty Act) and it is illegal to have any protected bird (dead or alive), their nests, their eggs and even their feathers, no matter how you happened to get them.

"Anyone desiring to possess migratory birds or their parts or products should be aware that all of these are covered under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (16U.S.C. 703-712), which implements a series of international treaties designed to protect migratory birds.

Your understanding is incorrect.

Here is an owl that I caught a few months ago.

I once found a dead Spotted owl with 3 bands on the Sams River. Was into elk so I grabbed the legs with the bands and later turned them into region 6 F&W. I was a little freaked about possessing an endangered specie but the biologists were greatful to know the owls fate.

all the proper people were notified about the owl. The people that banded it were happy to get the info. so take it easy.

Remember biologists are not game wardens.  I would of hated to see what could of happened if you handed that owl to a game cop in the field.

think about it why do you think that they band so many birds. so you find one or shoot one legally you call and report the information back. I hit a owl with the car going to work out when i was working graves and it had a band on each foot. didn't know what to do at the time so i put it on the side of the road where i would rember it and hoping the coyotes wouldn't get it and on my way home in the morning i stoped by and called the number that was on the band and gave them the information on how i came across the owl and they asked me to bring it in to the fish and game department hear in Yakima and i was able to keep the bands.
Whack em and stack em
