Feel like ?$@&!!!
« on: May 05, 2013, 08:01:13 PM »
I was dog sitting for the in-laws last week. I have two dogs my self. So walking all three was out of the question. So I took all three dogs in my pick up. Needless to say my in-laws dog gets excited and jumps out after some cows behind a fence. Pretty roughed up! He has some ligament damage. He is in a straight jacket to prevent use. He has been eating. Just feel like a big pile of shat!! My dogs are family members! I know he is the same to my in-laws. Feel so crummy!!

Dodged a bullet there, and you also learned a lesson too, some type of crate or restraint is a good idea, even for dogs that a  veteran open bed riders .You just never know when something (cows, cats, rabbits who knows what)will trip their switch to jump for it.

I had a seasoned open bed rider bail out after a rabbit over 25 years ago,no more open bed riders here, she didn't get hurt but it was an eye opener for me.

:yeah: yeah... my dogs don't even get to roam loose in the back while the canopy is on, not even for quick trips. they are always in a crate while were moving. people need to wear seatbelts for protection and dogs need crates. period.

My lab was 8 months old when she bailed outta the truck window after a grouse in the blues. A broken leg and 2500 dollars of surgery. We call her the bionic dog.  :chuckle:

$5 worth of hardware is what i  have ALWAYS used to keep my dog in the back of the truck. An eye bolt, Clip and sturdy chunk of rope that is just short enough they can't hang themselves.  :twocents:

sorry to hear. Glad she made it though. Like everyone else here, crate's the way to go. Everybody stays safer.

The girlfriend was watching her friends dog, her dogs brother.I came home from work and it ran out of the door, down the street and it got hit by a car. It died. I wasn't very popular.

Update: he seems to be doing well. Has his front shoulder wrapped up to heal. Hopefully no surgery is required. I took him a smoked beef bone last night, he was happy to see me. I was afraid he would shy away from me but he didn't. I am going to either crate them up or put anchors in my bed. Pretty sure the anchors are the way to go.

The problem with tethering dogs in the bed is it doesn't give the dog any protection in the event of a roll over crash. A crate will.

Veterinarians also make good money off dogs that had their head hanging out the side. Nothing like a piece of gravel or other debris hitting a dog in the face at 25-70 mph. It happens more often than you might think.

The problem with multiple dogs and anchors is they will get tangled. The dog needs to be tethered in the middle so it can't get its body over the side and choke  to death. I have had 2 or 3 dogs at a time for 40 years. Dog crates are fool proof. I have 2 large plastic crates and a steel mesh crate that will hold 2 dogs if they get along.

It's also the law that they be restrained in the bed of a truck, if it's open. A buddy got a ticket for that a few years back
