Paying for fenced in elk
«
on:
October 08, 2008, 11:44:30 AM »
A few years ago, I was elk hunting and ran into another hunter. We talked for a while and he told me something that bothered me. He said that there was a rancher or farmer that lived in the Nile unit that had an elk fence around his property. He said that when the snow hit and the elk started coming off the hill, the rancher would open the fence and let elk into his green fields then close them in.He would then charge big money to let people hunt the elk. Is there any truth to this? I hope not.

I know exactly what your talking about. It is during the late hunt ( believe this is considered a depredation hunt). Its the alfalfa field on the Nile road on the left hand side before you get to the timber. I got the number from a friend a couple of years ago. Here is the deal: He doesn't charge anything, but you are given number and have to call in everynight to see if you number is called. If so, you need to show up at a certain time. I believe they have 23 stations, along with a map of where you can sit ( like blinds)...all hunters need to have a radio on the same channel. You are allowed to shoot, though not pursue your hit, you must wait till all the elk are killed then the head guy will let you go and retrieve. After listening to the whole spiel, I choose to not participate.....didn't sound to sporting for my taste.

The elk do come down and eat the farmers hay, etc, and do some real damage to his property and I do belive the hunt takes place in late dec., almost at x-mas time. What turned me off is the farmer does have a two way gate, that he closes, until all of the elk that are on the property for that hunt have been killed. So basically you have elk running around a field and guys shooting at stations until they are all gone. I met the guy at his house, signed the permision slip and was all ready to go, even got my number called....but at the last minute, just couldn't do it...something didnt seem right ( not the farmer...but more inside me). Think the farmer is doing what he can to stop the damage.

I have gotten elk on Nile loop rd a few years back, It must have been a different guy. There weren't any other people hunting there with me and I was in a tree stand on the back of his place.

Not True at all. I have hunted this property a lot when they had this late hunt. The game and fish Would not help keep the elk out of his hay and they would devastate his crop.So the game and fish opened a late hunt from the elk fence to the river. This was only open for 3 years. There is a elk fence on the back of his property with 2 elk one way elk gates so they can go out but not in the Field. There is also a elk fence buy the Nile road .The north and south sides of the property that are by far the longest sides were not elk fenced. The elk would come up from the river up the 1600 rd and into the Field. This was a damage controlled hunt.Dick Matson was nice enough to let a few hunters put meat on the table, while in favor help him with his elk problem. It was a well organized hunt 3 days a week and did what the game and fish wanted it to do.The elk were not fenced in and could leave the property when they wanted.Just cause you hear something does not mean it's true.
