7mm RUM & STW are not what I would call for light weight rifle.  With these calibers, you would need a magnum action, more weight.

Since you already purchased the barrel and asking about which 7mm cal.  I would think that you bought a rough un turned, un chambered barrel.

I would look into:
7mm-08
7X57 (my favorite)
.280 Rem
.284 Win

With the choices above, you're still within the standard actions.

The 7mm calibers are normally found in the 9.5 twist & 10's

I haven't picked a barrel yet I can get any size length or caliber.  But I'm thinking 7mm might be a little big for a light weight gun

If you get into the mag calibers, then yes.  NOT if you get into the calibers I mentioned and for the action a Ruger M77 are based on the small ring Mausers, well at least the old M77 with tang safety, not so sure about the MKII.

You can also look at 6.5X55; 6.5 Creedmore.  You do choose the 6.5 caliber ensure that you get a 7 or 8 twist.

I like the .280 Ackley.
6.5 x 284 sounds like a great option as well.

If you have not given the 257wby a look...it deserves it. 3600 with a 100gr pill makes for next to no hold over to 400yds. I have plowed through and through on elk at that range resulting in DRT.

280ai is a solid choice, feeds well has good speed for its case and tons of bullets, although I would still go 284 just for action length and accuracy potential.

A 6.5wsm, 6.5/284, 260ai....etc would give you a lot of bullet slickness capability but require more holdover than the Roy. For a sub 500yd hunting rifle, it's tough to beat the 257roy.

A 6.5-284 will crush the 270wsm down range. The 6.5 bullets are slick as snot on an iceberg.

There's a reason the 7MM Rem Mag is the most popular of the 7's.   Just sayin'.     :chuckle:

For dall sheep.....284. Light short action, super proven in the lr world, plenty fast for 1,000 yard sheep kills if you do your part.

Perfect!
