There's a reason the 7MM Rem Mag is the most popular of the 7's.   Just sayin'.     :chuckle:

It's the Honda civic of cartridges. Nothing special, but. Most things pretty fair.

Ouch.......

I knew someone had to say it, but........ Ouch.       :chuckle:

You should be looking at actions first before the stock.

That's probably why I have not shot my 7 mag in nearly 30 years, it's a freaking honda in disguise.

What kind of budget are you working with? Remington and clones will be the lightest with easy to get parts. Winchester will come in about 6oz. heavier. You might have trouble finding a smith to work a tikka. A 1:8 is plenty to stabilize a 140/142 class bullet. The 123scenar is nearly as slick and a bit faster. The action will dictate the COAL and the reamer used. The stock is the last piece of the puzzle, but the one you will have to wait the longest for.....or find a used one.

The reason to choose the 6.5-284 is its ability to push a 140/2 grain bullet extremely accurately and fast enough for long range kills. I suggest you pick a target weight, that will dictate the rest of your parts choices.

7lbs scoped

If you plan on anything more than a compact scope....the winchester is gonna be tough to hit the weight.

tikkas arnt your best option to mod . weatherby mv ultra light , then use your shien 26 fluted #2 with a break . that combo would put you pretty close to six lbs , leuopold vx3 4x12 bdc or turret mod    or spend a ton of dough getting a 700 that light ?

My experience with weatherby ultralights is what started me into rifle building. I was staunchly dissapointed. Here are some action weights for comparison.

A pierce long action is about 21oz and a short is 19.....iirc. They are about $1400 tyd.

Rem 700 short ADL 2lbs 3.5oz
Rem 700 short BDL 2lbs 4oz
Rem 700 long ADL 2lbs 6.5oz
Rem 700 long BDL 2lbs 7oz

Rem 600 1lb 15oz
Rem 788 2lbs 11oz
Rem 7 2lbs 2oz
Mauser Mark X 2lbs 15oz
Sako medium 2lbs 5oz
Sako long 2lbs 13oz
Ruger short 2lbs 6oz
Ruger long 2lbs 8.5oz
Win 70 2lbs 10oz
Weatherby Vangaurd long 2lbs 13oz
Weatherby Mark V 3lbs 3oz

high country - with all the weights you have shown does anyone build off of the Rem 7 or 600 actions?

just curious if there is a downside to those actions from smith perspective?
