Building new 7mm?

tikkas arnt your best option to mod . weatherby mv ultra light , then use your shien 26 fluted #2 with a break . that combo would put you pretty close to six lbs , leuopold vx3 4x12 bdc or turret mod    or spend a ton of dough getting a 700 that light ?

Tikkas are great hunting rifles right out of the box . as far as building a custum stuffs hard to find . my gunsmith wont touch one . there's so much stuff for 700's that it justs makes sense to build one . sure rugers and mausers make fine rifles just takes more to build one . If a guy starts with something pretty nice and puts a custum barell on it your money ahead . If you build a ground up your gonna be 5-6k into it with glass . He could rebarells   a mv ulta light and be in it closser to 3k with good glass and have a real lightwieght hunter.

Another option would be to rebarrel a Kimber Montana.  My wife bought me one for an engagement present and it shot like hell.  I threw a barrel on it and bedded it, and it shoots the lights out.  I put a 26" 4.5 contour on mine, but you could go with a 24" #2 and have a very fine 6lb rifle.  The stocks are very nice, the triggers are very nice, and the action is very nice.  My smith said that most of the Kimber actions are very true.  Mine did not need to be squared up.

Got it, so it's more of an availability thing than anything else and a gunsmiths preference...

you are probilly a bit short on that $2500 number and it would still be a tika . why not just buy a sako and put good glass on it if you want a .243 ? JJ's idea of a kimber is a good one or even a cooper .

high country - with all the weights you have shown does anyone build off of the Rem 7 or 600 actions?

just curious if there is a downside to those actions from smith perspective?

Lots of guys build on model sevens. They are a good choice for light weight guns that don't need to shoot long bullets.

I would keep in mind that a custom action or a rem ti action is easy to get rid of for 80% of cost or better. A trued up rem will get 1000 questions on who did it and tennon size....blah blah blah, a win is in the same boat. A custom tikka or Kimber takes a special person. You may want to ask your smith about extra costs if you choose the Kimber or extra wait times due to its shank size being oddball. When you get down to it, a stiller, pierce or any other custom for that matter will bring your cost up a few hundred over a Kimber/weatherby but in the end....you can still have something of value to more than just you.

Your right coach, I confused the price that I tell my wife that it costs with what it really costs...

Lot's of options when it comes to custom or semi-custom projects and there are gunsmiths who like and will use Tikka actions.

As to my 243 project, will likely take many years to figure it out as it will be my last, or maybe that's another fib I'm telling the wife and myself too!
