guide for western Washington rifle season
« on: May 10, 2013, 10:19:53 PM »
so this will be my 3rd year buying an elk tag but most likely my first year i actually get to go, due to military deployments for the last 2 seasons. i was wondering if i should just pay the money and get a guide or try and figure it out myself, first time ever elk hunting. if getting a guide is the best thing then any recommendations? if a guides just a waste of money anyone got some tips to offer?

I would not pay for a guide anywhere in this state, but the Wenaha or Tucannon GMU's. You can guide yourself by taking the time to research descent elk areas. Pull harvest reports and look in the game regulations on where the majority of hunters are applying for special permits. Go to a few areas and scout multiple times before the season. Hunt the clear cuts in the mornings, and then hit the timber and hunt the drainages. I would also focus on areas that have jack firs (10-15 foot tall trees). The elk hold up in those areas, but you can find elk passing thru small openings to get a shot. That is how I got my elk last year.
