Leupold Mk AR scopes
« on: April 22, 2013, 02:38:58 AM »
I'm looking for a decent scope for my Rem 700 .308 to be used for mostly longer range shooting and maybe some hunting in open country. I have no experience with the Mk AR line of scopes but they seem pretty good on paper and get good reviews. I can get a 3-9x40 for $250, the 4-12x40 for $355 and the 6-18x40 for $390, all with the mil-dot reticle. They run slightly less for the standard multiplex reticle and slightly more for the TMR reticle. I know the turrets are calibrated to 5.56mm but they also have standard 1/10mil markings. If desired later I could order turrets labeled/calibrated to .308 and install.

Any experiences with these or recommendations for something in the similar price range?

I've got a MK 4 LR/T on my rem700 sps. Love it. There was a guy on snipers hide selling 5 - MK 4's for about $850. I know that's double your price, that that's also about $500 under msrp. I was able to get mine, 3.5-10x40, for $800 NIB from a different seller.

Yeah, I can grab the Mk4 LR/T 3.5-10x40 TMR or Mil-dot for about $815. They're great scopes, but I don't know if I really need something that good/expensive for my purposes. I'm hoping for something cheaper that still has quality glass, reliable tracking and durable.

I'm also looking at other alternatives -
Weaver 3-10x40 Grand Slam ~$300
Millet TRS-1 4-16x50 ~$300
Bushnell Elite Tactical 10x40 ~$350
SWFA SuperSniper 10x42 ~$300

I trust Leupold scopes to be great quality and the price is discounted nicely putting them in my price range, but these others get good reviews as well.

I would be much more comfortable with the Bushnell Elite or the SS.
Better glass and construction.

The Mk AR scope are excellent optics. I had a 6-18x 40 Mk 2 (that's what they called the MK AR a few years ago) that got shuffled around for a couple years. I spent some time on a 25-06 and 300 WSM rifle as well as a 338/375 Ruger pistol, and a 300 RUM pistol. it worked great.

I set it up right next to 3 VX-3s, a Sightron SIII, and 2 Mk 4 scopes and it fared very well. The glass was just as good as the VX-3, the adjustments were solid and tracked perfectly, and the adjustable objective worked perfectly.

There was a little distortion at the extreme edge of the field of view, but no worse than I've seen on most other scopes in that price range. I wouldn't have any problem buying another one if I were looking for a 40mm objective scope. The only reason I don't still have it is because I moved more towards 50mm objective on most of my target/plinking guns. It currently sits on top of a 308 that I built for a buddy and he loves it.

KF why would you get a AR scope for you 30-06. The advantage of the mark AR is getting a scope already setup for the 223 with dials. You are way better off just getting a cds model and getting the dials made for your 30-06.

I have 3 of the mark AR's and like them a lot but all are on 223's.

it also has the MOA printed so I would ignore the BDC portion

I just want a low turret 3-9 scope or slighty bigger with moa clickers and zero stops.

Also, I'm pretty sure the MK AR scopes are just VX2 optics

Yeah I think so as far as glass quality. That's why I would suggested the cds vx2. Low profile turrets not target turrets. If you are going to just ignore the bdc that would be ok as well.

carp - I fondled the Mk AR line of scopes today and didn't like them much at all for my 30-06 anyways.
(they damm sure weren't VX-3 quality)

It'd be good on my AR for sure in .223 but I wouldn't stick it on anything else.   glad we had that discussion almost mail ordered it.

I checked out some VX-3's too and that'd more what I'm thinking - VX-3 in 4-12 power class with 50mm  AO CDS something along those lines.
Also like the low profile ones with the notch cutout for the barrel, didn't think I would.
