Of course we tried to get them to swim away. Not my first rodeo... :sry: Never like to see fish or game wasted. :bash:
Like Loki said, a rockfish decent device works great. And they are easy to make, just fill concrete in a can with some kind of barbless hook.

Well after my dads health issues were stable, we were able to make it out this last weekend. We were able to boat 5 keeper lingcod, 2 were small and one over sized. Smallest keeper was in at 29" and the biggest slid right under the slot limit at 35 1/2" (my fish). My buddy fought and threw back a pig that measured out at 43". My 5 yr was able to reel in his first legal fish :). My three yr old reeled in his first flounder :). Had a couple long line releases (lost fish), a couple felt huge. We also caught a few copper rock fish, which the eagles feasted on. It was a great trip!! My boys saw seals, dolphins and jelly fish. Had one fish get chomped at the tail by a seal. I will post up a few pictures in the next day or so. We didn't see any other fish caught. But sure got crowded when we hooked up :). Can't wait to make it back over! Thanks Pop.

I have never caught a rockfish and would want it to survive if i hooked one. What do you do to releas rockfish with the milk crate, weight the bottom of it and drop it down? :dunno:

Why are the eagles feasting on your coppers?  This is part of the problem and why they have stopped allowing us to keep rockfish in the Sound.  Please try to release them so they live.  There are lots of methods to do so, the upside down milk crate seems to be one of the easiest.
Wow you got some great pics SG! Looks like the rock fish numbers are growing in strength. Maybe, just maybe they will open it again someday for retention. Even with a 1 or 2 fish limit it would be nice. Dare to dream! Right now I'm waiting for June 1 when I can catch and sturgeon in the local waters.

They may open it again.  We used to have a good population but then the draggers came in force and really put a hurting on the local fish.  It's been a bunch of years since and it seems the population is rebounding finally.  Hopefully they don't come back and do it again.

The problem with that idea is that the draggers have been out of the Sound for, I think, at least 25 years.  They did huge amounts of damage and their trails can still be seen on the bottom today.  Now, I think a huge part of the problem are the seals, i know that "they" say the seals don't eat many, but why then are the seals in all of the places where I catch rockfish?

I'd be fine with even an 80 foot restriction for fishing for our one keeper rockfish if they are so worried about the canaries and yellow eye.

I went out last night, had something on, but it didnt fight like a ling.  Dropped off about 20 feet from the surface.

Watched a guy next to me pulling something that was NOT a ling and throw it in his boat.  :bash:

I would, but I'm headed to Long Island for a wedding...  You dont want to go with me anyway though.  Most Lings are bigger than my boat, however I'm so bad at catching them there's no risk of capsizing.

If you're serious about going, meet me down at Scuttlebutt's at 8am.  Severe tides that day, so bring some 4oz to 8oz cannonball sinkers and your favorite rod.  I got everything else (got an extra ling rod too, if you don't).  We should be able to catch our bait before the tide slacks and have a decent chance at getting into some lings for a few hours around 10 to 1pm.  Probably be all done by 2, which is just in time to harass H20 into taking us to the range... right H20??

Sorry but I'll be out with Ripper putting some sturgies in the boat. His soon to be bride is a lot better looking than you so I think I'll stick with them.
