mule deer permits/building points
« on: May 10, 2013, 01:17:29 AM »
Thought I would as you guys what are the best mule deer permit hunts to apply for?  I have hunted sw washington my whole life and have gone 6/8 in killing bucks in that area. Nothing big and no spikes in those harvests. I have always wanted to hunt mulies and plan on making a hunt up icicle creek this year but I have never put in for a permit to build points and would like to put in for good mule deer units. any suggestions would be great thanks

You have of coarse looked at the latest Hunting regulations right? All the information you need is right there in the Special Permits section.

By best... do you mean "Biggest antlers"?
or do you mean most deer per acre?

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."

Honest opinion, don't put in for them, it's a scam. Hunt them hard regular season and you will have success

+1, look at the number of applicants in the different choices, there is a reason why a few of the units have the most applications each year.

Good hunts but just like some others the snow needs to coaperate to bring those bucks down. You may have to climb a bit during the modern hunts to get those good migratory bucks.
Remember that buck is climbing that Mt. every day!

Ok, so if I understand correctly, you are wanting to know what is the best hunt to put in for "for building points".  That's easy.  The best way to "build points" is to not get drawn (if you get drawn, your points go back to 0 and you have to start over), so the objective here as I understand it, is to not get drawn.  In that case, I would refer you to the previous post that suggested looking at the draw odds in the hunting regulations.  They show "last season apps" and the number of tags available.  Look for the worst draw odds.  It should be the hunt that makes you physically depressed when you run the numbers through a calculator.  Don't worry, there are several to pick from.  Found it?  OK, now pony up your $13 and send it to WDFW, then wait for about a month for the draw results.  Rinse, lather, repeat.  In 15 or 20 years you will be absolutely flush with points.

Best of luck.
