Your lucky!!!   I always right my full name and phone number or e-mail just in case. I found a camera years ago the disc had lots of wedding pics. I found a first name and the first letter of his last name. I looked in the phone book and call some people. I found one of his family members. I think it was his ant. He was a fireman at fort lewis. He was happy that I found the camera. So ever since then I right my name and number.  LOL I had a crab thief call me to tell me thanks for the crabs and my pot.  :bash: It works either way.

Received a phone call today from forest service ... They have my camera... They removed the camera , because they are going to do a prescribed burn. Still not pleased for all the hoops I had to jump thru to recover it.

What should they have done in your mind?? They saved your camera from being burned up and got it back to you with no way to ID the owner. You should have thanked them rather than complain about hoops you had to jump through.

I'd rather it been left the hell alone! Nobody did me any favor taking it down. Now I gotta find away to get it. 2 hr drive! My last trip up I was there to pull it down. If it got burned it gets burned and that's on me, but I highly doubt it woulda been effected with a prescribed burn and where it was.

I'm not the only one who feels the same way over this issue. Many on here have texted me over this issue.

Suggestion.   Send them an empty box with return address label and postage.
Lot less expensive then gas.  I'd include a $5 Starbucks card for their trouble.
They thought they were doing the right thing and at least you're getting the camera pack.

That's kind of where I am with it John.   I understand your perspective Hunt, just leave well enough alone, but they thought they were doing the right thing and took the time to do it I guess, though without a label on it, howd they expect this to work out.  In a month it would have ended up being someone else property "essentially stolen".   Indeed, if you hadn';t had the other camera there.   I hadn't thought of that.   Its definitely something to think about.  I wonder if they take down tree stands and everything else they find?   Of course that begs the question, should we be leaving private property on public ground, and the age old debate about trailcameras....

I guess if they left it alone, you could have got a big pile of charcoal back. Instead you're getting your camera back that you probably spent $100+ on. Sorry, but I don't feel sorry for you. You're getting your camera back, it didn't get incinerated, the guys thought they were doing a good deed and you continue to trash on them.  I'll never understand people like you.

Maybe they were doing what they thought what was a good deed, maybe :dunno: maybe someone thought they scored a cam and planned on keeping it.

I find it hard to believe that if they had melted your cam with the burn you wouldn't say a word in complaint.

I, for one, am happy for the property owner: He gets his cameras back, and he was treated properly by his government workers.  (OK, it took a while to prove that those cameras were his, and he was a bit steamed about this.  In time, he will forget the aggravation.)

The good news is this: Our FS did NOT steal his personal property.  I disagree with the line of thinking that private property--such as trail cameras--are somehow "illegally placed" on public property.  Balderdash!

All is well that ends well.  Please follow the advice of a previous poster, and send the FS a gift card.  (I often will stop by the local grocery store and buy a box of doughnuts for the crew--truly, I do.  It can never hurt, believe me.)

Thanks for closing the loop on this story.

 :yeah:

I'd lean towards someone though they scored a free cam and then when they got asked about it they played I didn't want it getting burned up card.  It simple if it's not yours leave it alone. If it got burned up so be it either way the cam owner would be out a cam.  People can say what you will but it that a standard practice of the FS to take public property? If so were is stored and does it get sold at a public auction?

If so I want the website or phone number. If they don't have a good enough answer as to what policy they have in writing that tells their employees to take other peoples things without permission in the case of a burn then what they did was a stole that cam regardless of what they say their just trying to cover their butts. :twocents: :dunno:
