True wild rice only grows in the far northern midwest, when I lived there I used to harvest it every season.  It is very selective as to where it will grow.  Carp will wipe out wild rice if they get into the lake.

That said, they have developed some paddy versions that they grow in CA so anything is possible.

Check with the DNR befor planting any.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

You can plant it, just can't knock it down or spread it around to make it easier for the birds to get it.  Never heard of rice doing well up here, but no different than what the clubs do by planting corn then flood for season.  But always check with the law first if you are unsure.

I am waiting for a phone call back from fish and game. I dare a carp to try and get into our ponds. He will shortly feel the mighty wrath of my Areo force  :chuckle: My grandpa said once upon a time fish and game actually gave him some rice seed. He said it grew like a weed for years until the cows found out what it was. So if i can get the right stuff i know it will grow. I also heard there are patches of it growing in coeur d'alene.

They grow wild rice commercially up on the chain lakes off the St Joe river in North Idaho, so I know it will grow here.

Plant wild millet instead.  That is what Paul Sullivan has growing in his pond.  If it grows naturally you can do whatever you want with it.  If it's a planted crop you have to leave it stand.  Paul rolls the millet by his pond which is legal.

When I was a kid a guy planted a private pond on Whidbey Island. I don't know what kind he grew but he said it was wild rice and it regrew every year. Drew lots of ducks.
The first bird may get the worm, but it's the second rat that gets the cheese.
