Pasayten Follow up
« on: October 01, 2008, 07:42:48 AM »
Why is archery deer closed in the passeyten wilderness in September? I can't really come up with a good answer. Is it because of the High hunt?

This was the question asked by Wolfman a last week.

I have talked around to people and the answer i usually get is either a serious answer of a joke.
They say it is so the outfitters can have the first crack at it.

anybody ever heard this?

I'd say its the same as any other unit and spreading the wealth, why some are open and some are not.  It helps keep the user groups seperated a bit so there is not conflict.   If you are dieing to hunt it, buy a modern tag and hunt with your bow.

The WDFW is against providing equal opportunity for archers.

If I read the regs correctly, the archery season is open at the time that the High buck hunt begins, it does not exempt you from hunting a wilderness hunt. It is required to wear hunter orange though. I may be wrong. :dunno:

But the Pasayten Wilderness is a Game Management Unit and is not open to archery hunters. Look it up. It's GMU 203.

Yeah, you better have a modern tag in your pocket if you are hunting there.

I don't know why the pasayton isn't open for archery in September, but I will say this I am an archery hunter and I definately don't feel that our opportunities are less than any other weapon. If a person had the mind (and the time) to do it we could hunt deer, elk, or bear from August 1st to December 31st. That's five consecutive months of open season. Deer alone would afford you 81 days of general season with opportunities all over the state for all three species and multiple tags to boot if drawn. C'mon let's use our time to hunt not complain.  ;)
