Aguila Super Colibri Problem
« on: May 23, 2013, 08:22:40 AM »
I had a weird and potentially dangerous experience with this stuff yesterday.  I’ve been shooting it lately in my .22 pump rifle and it works great, virtually no report, it sounds almost like I’m dry firing.  But yesterday one of the rounds sounded funny and I noted it didn’t hit the target.   Weird I thought, how did I miss at that range?  I pumped it and tried another.  The bullet popped out the barrel and dropped about 10 feet in front of me.  Very weird, something’s wrong with this.

I unloaded and checked the barrel and I found a stuck bullet in it.  Not good.  My guess is I had a squib  round that stuck in the barrel and the next round built up enough air pressure between the bullets to pop out the stuck round but then it stuck as well.

If you shoot this stuff make sure that each round actually makes it all the way out of the barrel, especially before you shoot a full power round.

I quit shooting that stuff because I was worried that would happen, it seemed like the bullets were barely coming out of the end of the barrel. I shoot CB longs around the house now, they are whisper quiet and I feel like they have more power than those Aguila rounds but to be honest its been several years since I have shot those.

I shoot the stuff, but only out of my ruger single six. If I remember correctly, they don't recommend it's use in rifles because of the low pressure isn't enough to push it out reliably. That might be for semi autos though.
The only difference between a butt kisser and a brown noser is depth perception.

It does work better out of pistols.  I get more velocity out of my K-22 with it than I do out of the rifle.  More friction in the longer barrel I guess.

I wouldn't call it an ammo problem.  That's the risk of shooting very low velocity ammo.  I believe the packaging specifically warns that this might happen with long barrels.  I've shot standard Colibri through a 10/22 just fine but I prefer Super Colibri because of the slightly higher velocity without increased noise from long barrels.

the colibi's I have are clearly marked on the package- for use in pistols, and warns of the hazard in rifle length barrels ... if it's for a long gun, get short CB's or the new "quiet .22"..
