Story time!  Now that I am a little rested... but not much haha.  My buddy and I went out hunting after work.  He was going for an elk with a bow and I was going to take a bear with my rifle if we happen to run into one.  Hunted hard all day in the heat and turned up nothing.  It was just starting to get dark and we were following the elk freeway just outside a clearcut when i found fresh bear tracks.  I looked at my buddy and we hadn't seen elk and since his elk was priority I waited for him to ask if I wanted to follow the tracks.  Heck yes I did haha.  So right as we start to follow them the wind decides to start gusting and everything sounds like an animal.  Trees creaking. Leaves falling.  All that fun stuff.  So we were just about to call it quits in this small opening when i spotted the bear ahead of us about 30 yards walking away from us.  I turned to tell my buddy and he crouched to spot it as I turned around to lean on a tree and get ready for a shot and watch the area.  I turned back one more time real fast to see if he spotted it and he pointed at it. I turned back around and the bear was about 10 yards from us and closing.  Just walking right on us.  I look through my scope and realize i have it maxed on the 9 setting.... fail. So all I see is a humungous ear haha.  I drop into the black to where the shoulder should be and without hesitation.... POW.... Bear takes off and I chamber another as I tell my buddy how huge the bear looked to me haha.  After a strenuous 50 ft tracking... haha lucked out... the bear was piled up on a small log on top of its face.  Looked way smaller then when it was walking right at me.  We kept our distance and made sure it was dead.  As I was about to go in to pick it up and get a good look at it my buddy steps on the log it was on and the whole bear shakes and moves.  I jumped about 42ft and S'd my pants at the same time as he was laughing at me even though he did it on accident lol.  by this time the headlamps are out.  We snapped a couple pics.  As we were taking pictures two trees fell with 50 yards of us.... pitch black and it was time to get outta there.  after a rigorous drag out and skinning for a rug it was about 2:30 am and time to head home.  First time bear and it was awesome! would do it again in a heart beat.  Wife was not happy that the bear was 10 feet away but with adrenaline pumping it didn't phase me one bit.  After taking the meat to the butcher and having the hide in the freezer and with all the fat we cut off i'd say she weighed between 200-225lbs and is about 5'-5.5' long.  Wow that story got long fast but it was just last night and it's very vivid haha. tons of fun! Now figuring out the rug stuff and away she goes!

My Father's philosophy was ALWAYS...........you shoot it, you gut it.
He provided guidance on the FIRST one......but that was it. After that......."You're on your own kid!" :yike:
