Looking to buy a traeger BBQ

  I'm looking to buy a Traeger BBQ, around Memorail Day I heard they usually go on sale but the best I have found for the Texas model is 999.00 from Old mill Country store in Ellensburg, I need the larger one because its for my fire Departments Firefighters Assn. we do food before meeting and y'all know firemen like there BBQ.

Thats about the best price I have seen for the Texas model, which I have also.  I think it is the way to go simply because you will never be disappointed in having to much grilling space, but you could certainly be disappointed when you dont have enough space.

Maybe I should be looking for a used one instead, I heard some great sales happen this time of year, what about Costco ?

Hey danderson, I would like to put my two cents in concerning the Traeger grill. Wife got one at Costco, the small one, made in china. We bought the electronic control unit hoping for better heat control. great idea, poor results, the heat setting on low, temp has been as high as 310. Unpredictable, erratic, all over the scale. Auger will over feed to the firebox, serious fire that will spread to the feed auger, burning in the bottom of the pellet hopper. Tear it all down ,remove the extra pellets, empty the hopper. Doesn't happen every time, but its a crap shoot. The bottom line, made in china, no thanks. Rant over, good luck. ff

I got a Rec-Tec which is a similar type pellet BBQ HUGE grilling surface, and it is awesome and super heavy duty and comes with a 6 year warranty. Just a thought !!

Roger that danderson, our fire dept is thirty minutes out, in good weather. When wifey fires up her pride n'joy ( I refuse to touch the $#^% thing), I make sure all the fuel is removed and fire is out. I would like to throw it under the left track of our neighbors D-6 but she hackles up a bit. ff

danderson, I too have a Rec-Tec and retired my Traeger for it.  You might want to go to their web-site and check on them.  They are built like a tank and temperature stays within 5 degrees of where you set it.  Hope that helps.

You might also check out the Green Mountain grills. I compared them both when I was looking to replace my propane grill a few months ago. Went with the Green Mountain. It has worked flawlessly so far. Even in windy conditions it holds the temperature where I set it. As a bonus, was roughly $100 cheaper than the comparable sized Traeger

Took my wife to the local toy store for a new salmon pole, she wandered over to the grille section, listened to the sales pitch and strike me dead, a Green Mountain Danl Boone model followed us home. Letter perfect, a 2 degree spike is the worst it's done. Oh happy day!! Guess she was pleased with her new salmon pole.

I love my Texas Traeger and would recomend it to anyone. I use my pretty heavy and after 2 years I had my first breakdown (hot rod went out), great customer service and support! I have noticed little more maintance is required but I wouldnt give my Traeger up for nothing.

Sold mine last year - just didn't use it enough and was too big for me.  Went to Costco to buy the little one, chatted with the sales dude for a few, he told me they moved production to China... I walked away.

I've heard reviews from 5 buddies who have bought them in the last year and a half, 2 good, 2 horrible, 1 neutral. 

Moving to China ruined them for me.

If you're looming at a Traiger, checkout Green Mountain Grills. I was gonna buy a Traiger myself, but after researching it, I came to the conclusion That Green Mountain Grills are a step above.

I'm going to replace my Treager in a year or two.

So far I've had a few issues.

1) hot rod burned out - had to replace under warranty
2) paint peeled off the barrel and smoke stack - replaced under warranty

3) when smoking I'm getting ash accumulation around the hot rod, enough so that the fire goes out and it pumps pellets into the fire pit and they don't make contact with the hot rod and pretty soon it's filled up and spilling unburned pellets into the bottom of the bbq

then I gotta take out the rack of meat, drip pan and fire deflection plate and vacuum up all the pellets and ash and start it back up = sucks!

Thanks for all the reviews, I haven't picked one up mostly because I been waiting for a better deal, 1000 dollars is a bit more than we want to spend, I heard the Texas goes on sale around the holidays but haven't seen a reasonable  price yet, the green  mountain smoker sounds like a better product

I bought my traeger used about 3 years ago and love it.  I had to replace the heating rod in that time.  I know a lot of people that have them, and don't know anyone who doesn't like it.  I was kind of shocked to see the posts on here. Old Mill has awesome customer service when it comes to the traeger.

Never had a trag but I've eaten from them. Not Bad! Serves it's purpose. My friends that have them love them. Set it an forget it an eat

I have no complaints from my Traeger, except my pants are shrinking.
