Which is a better rifle. Im just looking to deer/ elk hunt with it. I have a 700 in .30-06 but im looking to get something is .308 thats stainless for under 600 bucks. Got any suggestions? This is for my wife. I've heard the savage 111 or axis is a good gun as well.

take her to a shop and see what fits her the best. I have both and would base my decision on fit and the best trigger. That being the accutrigger on the Savage imo. I think Cabelas has a Savage 16ss/nikon combo for around 600 bucks. you can't go wrong with either brand tho. good luck in your search and be open to other calibers as well.

It's a wash in my opinion. I have two target rifles, ones a Rem., ones a Sav. and I like them equally. Most of my hunting rifles are Savages but that is only because I like to putz with rifles. Savages are easier to change barrels, you can do it at home, no lathe needed to set headspace.

Out of the box the Rem is a better looking and feeling rifle but don't shoot any better than the Sav. Rem has more after market accessories available but the Sav is very close to it.

Handle both of them and pick the one you like best. I doubt that you will go wrong with either.

Right out of the box, Savage is probably building some of, if not, the best shooting factory guns on the market. I'm a HUGE Remington 700 fan and I think Savage builds, IMO, the ugliest action money can buy. BUT, if I was looking to purchase and off the rack rifle tomorrow, it would be a Savage. They shoot great right out of the box and they come with a very good, easily adjustable, trigger.

Now, if I was buying a rifle I knew I would some day rebarrel and or turn into a custom, I'd get the Rem. 700. You can certainly rebarrel a Savage also but the Rem 700 action is the small block Chevy of the gun world.

I bought a 700 as my first rifle. The stocks, unless they are wood, are worthless. Since most of them are plastic, you can't get any decent or consistant action screw torque. The Savage has the new accu-stock with aluminum bedding, much better. The X-Mark trigger is okay, but not any safer than the original one and just failed the dop test for the miltary. Basically when dropped it will let the firearm discharge. A savage trigger might, but I think unless that safety lever in the trigger is depressed the gun won't fire.

For an out of the box rifle I would probably get a Savage, wish I had for my first.
Remington has good reputation, but with changing the stock and the trigger a person might be better off getting a bare receiver and barrel and building a rifle from there.'
TC also has a pretty good bolt gun, but I dont know much about it. It has a 5R barrel and 60 degree bolt through, but looks like another plastic stock with no type of pillars or bedding.

I've had very good luck with the factory plastic stocks on my Rem and Sav. I do skim bed them and really hog out the barrel channel and don't try and use a bipod on them.

Like was suggested, have your wife pick up both and see what fits. You can't go wrong with either one. My friend and shoot heavy barrel .308's long range. Mine is a Savage 10 and his a Rem 700. No difference in group sizes if we do our part.

I would sure consider tossing the vanguard/howa into the consideration pile. Tis a lot of rifle for the dough. If I could get over the Chinese appearance of the savage, I would whole heartedly endorse them, but alas they are what they are. Remington's quality has gone south like an out of control rocketship. Howa still produces a tight rifle for a cheap price.

I vote Tikka with my own dollars.
I think you're less likely to get a lemon Savage than a Rem 700.

I'm very happy with my savage 111. It was my first rifle I bought though so I don't know much about rifles. Hasn't given me a problem yet though.

Are you looking at the Rem 700 SPS? The stock on the SPS isnt the nicest, but it suffices.

Savages are tack drivers, but if its a Rem 700 vs Savage 111, i'd go with the Rem 700

If you can up your budget a smidge, take a look at the Tikkas...

700....NO CONTEST........You can shoot those reduced factory loads which will give you .308 numbers and less recoil....then if you want, you can throw in hornady superformance loads, and now its shooting 300 mag numbers.....keep the rifle, spend the 600 bucks on Her. you will recieve a better return on your investment.

I'm a fan of both Remington and Savage but prefer the 700. Most snipers and competitive shooters (myself included) that I now start off with the 700 action and go from there. It is also an awesome rifle right out of the box.

Tikka makes a good out of the box rifle, plus nice aftermarket stocks out there now

For a stock rifle with no plans for it later, Tikka or Browning. Savage rifles are just too ugly

If you want to modify it down the road, Rem 700.
