Ok , first time buying cams and setting them up today!  Just bought some cheap tasco brand for now until I figure this stuff out?

1. What SD card do you use?
2 . Can I view SD card on my Iphone 5?
3.  Height off the ground?
4.  Would it be better to take lap top into trail cams to check pics?
5. Use of feed? I bought corn for bait?
6  any other suggestions?

This is my first trial run.  Don't know much about them

Thanks
Rtspring

Cameras will be a long ways from roads!

I use the 4gb cards (I believe it's gb, I dont know all the sizes, but it holds 3000+ pictures)
I also have 2 for each camera, and just replace the card with a fresh one and take the pictured up card back to the house to see pictures.

I hang my cams around thigh height.  Seems to work great for deer, moose, and elk.

Bait, whatever you have, wet cob works well....  Also find a trail and set the camera up looking down the trail not straight across it.

1) I would go with at least a 4 gb card but more like an 8 or 16 because there is nothing worse then showing up to a full card and the last picture being from a week or two earlier.

2) Not sure about the Iphone, I always bring a laptop

3) I set mine about waist high off the ground but it depends on if it is flat ground or not. I like to set it and then walk down to where I expect the animals to pass and judge it from there. I also recommend being farther back versus closer to the trail or bait. It sucks only catching a nose or a butt of an animal

4) see #2

5) I would bring some sheep salt with selenium. I have found the elk LOVE it and will tear the ground up to bare dirt

6) Make sure there are no little twigs or pieces of grass in the line of sight that might trigger the camera. You could end up getting a lot of blank pictures. I also like to have my cameras facing north if possible to try to keep the sun from glaring on it.

Hope this helps

Which Tasco? Is it infrared or white flash? AA, C, or D batteries? Doesn't really matter, I'm just curious which model it is. I've had pretty good luck with Tasco cameras.

For SD cards I use 2 GB or 4 GB cards. I don't think brand matters much, but I have Sandisk and Sony. I don't spend more than $5 per card.

For elk I've had pretty good luck with cob for bait. But if you're a long ways from the road you might want to just set them on trails.

The iPhone won't work for looking at your pictures. The laptop would be a good option, especially when you're setting up a camera in a location for the first time.

To view the photos just take a digital camera. Much lighter than a laptop.

1. What SD card do you use?
I think a 2G is enough, at Waly World for $8

2 . Can I view SD card on my Iphone 5?
Yes, but you have to have the adapter

3.  Height off the ground?
Safer if its high up, less chance it gets stolen

4.  Would it be better to take lap top into trail cams to check pics?
Get two SD cards for each cam and just exchange them

5. Use of feed? I bought corn for bait?
Salt lick and grain, I think the elk will be more interested in salt than grain.

6  any other suggestions?

How long do you plan on letting it soak? That will give you an idea of how big of card you need. I let some go over a month so with those I like at least an 8 gb card because in a few spots I generally get about 1000 pictures per week.

To stop them in front of your cameras. Putting them on trails are good but if you can stop them for a few good pictures it is much better.

Get a trail cam that takes AA batteries. For some reaons I've had far better luck with battery life than cameras with C or D batteries. although you'd think it'd be the opposite my experience it isnot.

I put most of my cams about waist to chest height depending on terrain. For bait i use trace mineral salt with selenium in the spring and summer months, and sweet cob, apples, alfalfa and corn after the summer. Sd cards I use 4gb or better. Good luck and don't get to addicted to cams :)

for your height off the ground question, watch this.  also higher up gives better field of view which prevents the blurry photos of animamsl moving by close to the camera too fast.  and im glad everybody has said they use sd cards around 8 gigs or less, ive been spending $30 a pop on the 32g cards, knowing its probably overkill, just not being sure  how many pics cards can hold.  ill start buying 8gig cards now and saving some money.  Trail Cameras: What You've Been Missing - Reality Deer Management Ep. 8

Check this out for approximate storage capacity:

I believe most cameras' image storage size is slightly different, but a chart like that will give you a good ballpark idea of capacity.

I too have always gone overboard with card size.  Nothing worse than missing out on pictures because of dead batteries or a full memory card.  I usually run 4 GB cards on the cameras close to home and 16's on the ones I deploy when the snow melts and check right before hunting season.

I always just use a 50lb block of salt in front of my  cams. Sometimes i dump a jug of stump licker on a rotten stump with the salt block next to it. I dig a hole and bury the block about halfway because they like to roll them around. After they thin the apples in the orchards i always stop and grab about 60lbs off the ground on my way to check cams and re bait. The elk love the apple/salt combo.

Yeah I would go with Salt right now as they are attracted to it during antler growth. Also I set my cams high as I can and then aim them down if possible for two reasons. One the sun can be an issue and two those curious critters like to nose them around and move them. Also look for obvious limbs hanging around that blow easily in the wind and cut them down or you will fill up your SD card on one windy day.

Just my two cents.
