Ellensburg area deer numbers...
« on: October 12, 2008, 03:59:33 PM »
I have been hunting here for many years and have always seen a good number of deer(5-20) a morning. but this year, in the whole weekend, i have only seen 4 all weekend(3 saturday night, 1 sunday morning) I have hunted hard, in many different areas. I was just wondering if anyone around here noticed that too, or how your hunts were?!?!

It is the louse... deer numbers have taken a huge hit around eburg and yakima. I believe the biologists said over fifty percent of the deer herd has died in the past few years.

I went out this morning and saw 3 legal bucks but they wouldn't walk the 100 extra yards on to state land :bash:. One of the bucks was an old 4 point that had lost his whole right antler. To bad because he would have been a real stud.

Hey, Yes After 4 th years Gmu 335 Normal I never hunt any on Gmu 335 only west side or where I grew up eastern. I was very well experienced on area GMU 335. Yes you right NUMBER Mule Buck was totally down BIG TIME! I have 3 cuddeback Camera set up in Gmu 335 area and only had three LEGAL buck coming in only one time. Those buck hasnt come back since August 3rd week and they was on first picture and never come back ever again BUT most does, and under 2x2 did come back totally many times. No kidding. Maybe they moved somewhere else south cle ELum is way better number. But North u could see hundred deer down Valley rd. ALL of them are Does Barely few bucks. Barely legally
I believe Manges has spread all over badly on deer thur summer. I have some picture showed Manges Hair loss.

Also there is totally MANY MANY COUGARS! out there! I shot three cats this year and missed all of it off the road They really FAST cat!  :bash:  :bash: I have found few carcass dead bucks this year. I believe 6 Cats lived there that I have seen so many tracks MAYBE twice a month that I could cross a track on dry road and snow road.  :bash: Talked to Timber Manager who run whole north forest. She had two Boiloglist Officer working up there over year and collered few cats and two kittens was trapped by officer recently  summer by taylor road and bring those kitten to Wentachee office and released them later somewhere I dont know, probablly Chelan county, two female cats most recently read their GPS last july they travel from Rosyln down to Klickitat county and return back up with in a month. 200 miles  :yike: Those are females. I am surprised NO ONE of you seen those cats! those sneaker bitch are good at sneaking.  :dunno:

Cougars normally hunt a Mule buck than does.

you guys better hunt cougars harder this winter! Or no DEER for u next year!!!  :'( I thought there will be a new county for draw kills but found out that Kittas county people are Cat HUGGER! Most Rancher I talked with totally DISAGREED with county people and officers. so they are giving out 6 kills permits in Klickitat  and 6 kills up Chelan county use pilot dogs so leave middle between two county. Because Boiloglist in Cle Elum told WDF that there is NO COMPLAINTS reported thats why they dont give any permits.
Yes public people can hunt boot on cougars but not use dogs! Its SAD! Sorry hunting season down there wasnt good for ya. Hope this winter will help u hunt those *censored*s.
Hey everyone better get ready for winter!!! I will definely HELP u if you are up to boot hunting this winter! I want those cats OUT! So we can see nicer bucks!

here 3 pictures last winter around Feb. I could find 12 cougars cuts thur valley Teanaway PUBLIC road!. I am not kidding.

cougars are everywhere over there. ive seen 4 in while elk hunting int he last 2 years. indians have been hunting the hell out of the area aswell.

i was up there all day around lake cle elum and seen 4 deer. tons of elk (now that the season is over) and 2 mountain goats.

ive hunting the areas surrounding ellensburg and cle elum hard for the last 3years, and 7 or so years when i was younger. is the deer population has seriously taken a hit. it would be nothing to see 7 shooter bucks a day in the areas i hunted. and now im lucky to see a buck let alone a legal one.

i know the cougars around here are really, but from the deer a saw last winter, to now, ???

Most people will stay here the whole week, but after a drive up in the hills this morning, everyone must be doing horrible.

It makes me scared what they will do with the units. Will they close a unit down due to lack animals? if so i will be traveling next. (probably even if they close it)

335 unit, I hiked in at 3:45 am, was sitting in my spot at 6:00am.  Hunted all day. I seen 14 deer,  i was up way high,  4 came out, watched them, then all the others came out and the two that i did not see the heads took off running instantly and ran over 500 yrs over shail and never slowed down.
There was one spike in the group that i watched for 45 min.
Another hunter later that day told me about the 2 deer that never slowed down.  I only seen them for about a 20 yrd slot but he was the one that seen them from about a 1000 yrs away that seen them run all that way and could not make them out.  Thats how hard they were running.  Im curious if they were bucks.  I never hear of deer doing that.  Just two seperated from all the other ones to run through all that open country.  hmm.  It was nice being out.

you hunting around your town?

i just talked to a friend who lives just outside of yak, and he also has been destroying coyotes. resulting in him seeing alot more deer this year aswell. i dont think they threaten the deer, but the pressence of them might keep the deer away

Same story, GMU 335...we got skunked.  Our area that we can usually pass on bucks to hold out for bigger ones didn't produce.  Very few deer seen only one legal one spotted and missed by the guy that was hunting with me.  A huge influx of people as well into our area and we hunt really high.  Hopefully it rebounds.  I agree cougar predation takes its toll on mule deer and elk, but isn't a significant problem in this GMU to totally turn the population into a downward spiral.  I think it was the harsher winter, deer lice and cougar predation all mixed together.  We found two deer sheds last year on south slopes while hunting and we hunt at 5700-6000' feet.  So...if these deer winter there they got hammered this past winter.  My two cents anyways.

Once it snow we can get together and find fresh Cat track and we can walk thur tracks and follow them as long as we can till we see them shoot them. That way we want Help to build Mule deer population up. Anyone Interested??  I have a Gmu 335 Forest Timber Gate access to hundreds thousands acres. Sent me Pm. Full moon
68 degrees
No wind
Deer lice
Earlier season (away from rut)
Hard winter

I know....I know....lots of nice deer pix since 8 days ago.  Those hunters should be congratulated.  Most of those guys earned them.....hard hikes....high elevations....rough country....sacrifice.  That said, there's been a seismic shift to the worse for many GMUs.  We need to decide as a hunting community whether general season works anymore.  I'm personally starting to doubt it.  I want to hunt with my friends, so I'd probably put in a group application.  If the whole state (or.....Eastside?  Certain GMUs?) went the permit-only way, I'd be lucky to draw what?  Every five years?  But that hunt might be a dandy.  In mid-November, looking for big rutting bucks in real hunting weather.  I dunno.  I'm not sure we're on the right path.   :twocents:

346 was really bad this year.

I spent from Thurday before the opener to Friday after the opener and saw a grand total of 8 does. I saw all 8 does in two days.

I hunted high (in the snow) I hunted the sagebrush,I hunted the timber.

We've been hunting 346 for about 15 years and know the area very well.

Its hard to stay motivated when you know you just aren't going to see any deer. :'(

A) how big was that buck in the background of that last pic? Im pretty sure there is a buck standing in the upper left hand corner of the pic.

B) I was hunting in Ellensburg area this week and saw 9 deer total, all of them on thursday morning after it rained all night wednesday and the fog was thick. 8 does and 1 little buck.

Was there a flash on that second pic?  Their eyes are lit up and if there was did it spook them? Or was it a trail Cam?

GMU 254 was awful this year as well.  My group of 5 all got skunked and the 2 prior years we all tagged out.  All the legal bucks were hiding well.  Just to give an example one night I was set up in an ambush spot and in three hours I had a total of 28 deer pass me by of which 26 were does and 2 were spikes.

Yes it was flash on 2nd pic. I was sneaking in to almost 100 feet to him and they even not know I was right close to him.  :chuckle: it was almost 7 am Barely start to get light up. It was good one! It was not trailcam. let me show u other pic...

It was only 2x2 and about 10" tall. not even LEGAL buck yet.

Yes oh boy this road is awfully bad.. I had to use snowchain on 4 tires and use 4wheeler on CLAY mud! It was dangerous road!!! U see this picture of road was totally slipper even chains ON tires! Not funny. I dont like Clay mud road! I went up really steep hill to hike up more higher and went down could easily crash! I got stuck twice. I had fun!

What are you doing with a rifle?  You should join us bowhunters.  Crap, half the bowhunters can't sneak that close to game, they want to shoot them at 80yds.   :chuckle:   Good Job!

Did the flash spooke them?

I am an avid bowhunter for elk and on multiple occasions I had muleys this past week within twenty to thirty yards of me.  I wished I had brought my camera which I had planned on doing but changed my mind again at the last minute  :bash:
