That's a nice sized body on that deer as well, I'd be interested to see what it dressed out at (meat and bones) 145-155 is my guess....

Sounds tome like 400 yards was too far and a wounded deer needs to be put out of his misery. Just because you can see em in your scope doesn't mean its a good shot.  7mm has the range but honestly, I'm sorry, I feel like it has to be said- It sounds like you made 3 bad shots in a row and the deer still got away. Come on guys.  I'm sure you've made 500 yard kills a hundred times right?

It's tough in a canyon setting.  Not a lot of options.  Just seems like at that range you could have made a reasonable stalk on the buck you liked and had a better shot.  If you can get to them after they're down there was probably a way to get in on him.  If you can't get to them why shoot?

I am with you Zen.  It needs to be said.  Try blowing a stalk, at least.  A blown stalk is 10x more rewarding then wounding a buck.  Put them to bed and give it your level best.  There is no accomplishment, in my book, shooting a buck that far.  It doesn't prove anything.

Hope you find him tomorrow swift.  Just me but I always felt that the "Texas Heart Shot" wasn't so bad, especially on a wounded animal.   :twocents:

i'll take your criticism but if i wanted your opinion on whether i should of shot i would have asked for it.

you set yourself up for getting anyone's opinion when you posted your story in the public forum.

i don't care who you are or what you are shooting...400 yards off hand is a tough shot to make.

I'm Sorry Swiftkid. Both Zen and 300rum are absolutely right... when i first read the post i didn't even want to reply and i just shook my head.  :( you said you took a shot at 400yrs at a running buck? i thought he was eating a juniper tree... no running... there is gusts of 15 to 20 mph... and a standing shot?   :bash: i think you got a little excited and let on fly.  :bdid: I hope instead of getting defensive you think about all that happened today and come to realize that shooting at a buck isn't worth injuring it. I'm not going to tell you what you should of done because you have grown up hunting and with a wounded animal still out there you should know. I hope you find him and tag him. Congrats to your dad.

Ps. i know guys that live in the city because its closer to work and family but i bet they get out in the woods more then you every year.

The distance doesn't bother me....if you know the exact distance and he is standing still.  "about 400 yards" it where the trouble started.  There is a big difference between 350 and 450 on any rifle. (with your 7mm zeroed at 300 it is dropping at least 28" at 500)  Hope you find him!!!  (and get a different hat)

You are right.  Prone with my 7mm, 400yds is a chip shot (should be anyway), 13.5" low that is with my scope set at 2" high at 100yds.  Too bad, I will never shoot that far, other than paper, I am a bow hunter.  400yds might as well be 400 miles.  "Ol' Hickory said we could take'm by suprise, if we didn't fire our muskets 'til we looked in in the eye".   :chuckle:  Anyone remember were that comes from?

That is too bad this happened. I'm not sure I like the comment that the deer will live and be okay. He was shot with a 7mm, that is about as bad as saying my arrow only wounded him but he’ll make it. Also not sure it matters where you live as a reason to justify shooting skills. Just punch your tag and make sure not to shoot another buck.

Not that I think the shot was ethical or unethical, that's a hunters decision IMO, but where do you get off telling someone to punch their tag?  On top of the fact that the animal was taken, should he not be allowed to fill his freezer with food?  Give me a break.  400 yards is a long shot, but hardly "unethical" in my book if you can make it.

Give me a break...muscle wound?  I made the comment because too many people talk about animals shot and how it got away, or there was very little blood and it will make it....Not the case.  Seriously how many animals actually can survive the winter after being shot with a rifle or arrow.

BTW, I do have the right to say punch the tag, I'm not saying do not look for it and make an effort, just do not hunt any more deer this year.

I'm not the most experienced hunter on the block, however I have taken enough animals to know what a fatal wound vs, animal shot with less than perfect kill shot... Animals react differently, but the simple fact there is little blood doesn't mean the animal did not lay down and now can't get up. I bet the buck went and holed up and either can't move or is severely hurt and will become predator food.

I found out today that he had been takin by a hunter that was passing by on a near by road. Believe me i looked good and hard for 3 days, to find out today that less then 20 mins after he had last been seen he was already tagged.

BTW, I do have the right to say punch the tag, I'm not saying do not look for it and make an effort, just do not hunt any more deer this year.

If the deer is tagged and the kid knows for sure its the same deer he shot then IMO the animal is tagged. I agree with you, nw_bowhunter that if you wound an animal and even have the slightest thought of it being dead you should punch the tag for that animal. But Swiftkid says that he knows this buck has been taken by someone else so there is no reason for him to punch his tag.

I shoot a 120 grain ballistic tip with 62 grains of imr 4064 , it shoots flat,[/quote]

Just curious, why do you download the 7mm with the 120 gr? My way of thinking would be a 25/06 or if you wanted a mag the 257 roy or a 257STW.  Does the factory twist of your rifle stablize that bullet?  The lightest I  can shoot without loss of accuracy are 140's.

I agree, use better judgement next time on the shot, but if the deer was tagged and it is for sure the same deer then why should he punch his tag?
