11 yr. old daughters 1st deer. YOOHOO!
« on: October 13, 2008, 05:00:34 AM »
We covered quite a bit of ground on day one but the wind was howling and it was very uncomfortable. We sat on an eye brow hoping a doe would come strolling by. They did, we had two walk right in front of us at 30 yards. I ask my girl if she's on the lead doe and she says yes. I bleet and the does stop. I say shoot..........shoot....................shoot......................NOTHING. The deer ran off. My daughter lost them in the scope and couldn't re-aquire.  :bash:  :bash:  I felt terrible, a deer basically walks right in or lap and she couldn't pull it off. We checked a bunch of other areas out to see if we could find a bedded deer but nothing. Went back to the camp beat up from the wind, tired, and hungry. Grabbed a bite and hit the sack at 7:30.

Day two is really nice the wind was gone it was 20 degrees outside and I knew it would be a better day. We go back the the same set of eye brows and wait we saw 6 deer in the distance a few coyotes but nothing else. I know the people on the neighboring property don't get to the top till 9:00 abd thats when the deer start moving. 8:15, two deer come from the neighboring prop and stop at about 200 or so. I ask Em if she's got them, she says yes and I just told her to wait till they stop and take the bigger doe. They stop BOOM. Miss high left and the deer take off. Em was happy to see more deer but really wants to get one. So at 9:00 3 come straight in from or front right towards us. I'm pumped cause this'll be a 50-100 yard shot. But the wind us and stop in the stubble below. 180 yards out. You could tell they were nervous but not totally freaked out. The mamma stops broadside and Em cuts loose. Miss!! :bash:  I tried to console her by saying many adults can't pull that shot off and she really seemed fine although a bit disappointed. About 30 mins later two more does come into the stubble. I ask Em if she ready. She says yep. I bleat the deer stops and THUD. I know it's a good hit. The doe ran about 30 yards and fell, stone dead. Perfect shot double lung, heart shot.  :IBCOOL:  :IBCOOL:

Check this pic out. This was a doe, it had all the necesary equipment and was with a fawn. But the thing had buttons!. If you've ever felt buttons on a buck they are about half the size of these and not so pointy. Weirdest thing I've seen. Any input?

Alright! Tell Em congrats for me.

It was nice to meet both of you. We saw a few more does on Sunday, but that was it.

Thanks MH, nice to meet you to. I popped a 4 x 4 myself. I'm a bit bummed though. I wanted the rack to be outside the ears this year. I thought they were on this. Horns looked a little heavier too. I'd say a little above average for that area but not as good as it can get. The weather was great sunday. I wondered how you did.

Here's my deer. Hope you pop a biggy.

Nice buck,  I think you made the right choice. You could have done better in the late season, but you never know. I had a different late tag last year and held out only to shot a dink on the last day.

Congradulations, you  You made a big step in keeping her out of trouble in her teens. Nothing like hunting and fishing with dad. I have 3 girls and they all like the outdoors! STB

Thanks everybody. She was thrilled to say the least. Saturday beat us up pretty bad with the weather, and the 30 yarder that she couldn't scope frustrated her but when I got mine right away in the morning and she got hers in the same spot a little over two hours later it capped a great weekend. She even tried naming the lungs, liver, heart etc. What really made it great is that she got her deer at 11 and her sister got her first at 12 so she beat her by a year. Em missed three on the safety test and sis missed two so there's a bit of rivalry. I would have loved for her to get a buck, that would have been something else. Hopefully she stays as excited in her teens as she is now. Her older sis isn't as interested in waking up early and freezing to death so for now it's just me and Em.

Here's a pic that Em took of me carting the deer back, That was a real chore, one deer is no prob but two is punishing. These carts are fabulous for wheat country hunting. These deer were just over a mile in.

You both did a good job. Just think of all that fun you are going to miss in the late hunt now... :chuckle:
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.
